Second Generation
7. Lewis B. Latimer2 (Jenneke ‘Jane’1), born 24 May 1805 in Town of Rochester, Ulster County, New York;1, 2, 3 died 15 June 1845 in Town of Marbletown, Ulster County, New York.4 Lewis married Catharine Smith (born ca. 1806 in Ulster County, New York, parents not determined;5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Catharine died ca. 187110).

Catharine’s second marriage is implied by her 1855 and 1865 census entries (the latter indicating she was a widow and having married twice), and her apparent listing in the 1850 census with one Jeremiah Hawver, along with her youngest three children (all from her first marriage to Lewis Latimore, who died in 1845).

Catharine was granted a widowed mother’s pension for the death of her son Jacob, who died during the Civil War. Affidavits in her pension application indicate that Jacob provided her financial and material support for four years prior to his Army service, she being entirely and solely dependent on his support. He also contributed regularly by allotment to his mother for her support after his enlistment and up to the time of his death. The documents also indicate that Catharine and Jacob lived together as mother and son before his Army service.4

Catharine died intestate, and her son John H. Latimer was appointed Administrator of her estate.10, 11

He died of typhoid fever on 10 August 1863 [some sources say 11 August] at Camp Convalescent, Virginia, located near present-day Old Town Alexandria (one source says he died at Fort Barnard, Virginia, about four miles north of Camp Convalescent).4 Jacob is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia.12

Nineteen pages of the application for pension by his mother, Catherine Latimer, resident of Ulster County, New York, Post Office address: Stone Ridge, New York, and in later included documents as Kerhonkson, New York. Various documents and affidavits provide vital details, including his death date and place [given as 10 August 1863 at Camp Convalescent, Virginia], and the death date and place for Jacob’s father, Lewis B. Third Generation
11. John H. Latimer3 (Lewis,2 Jenneke ‘Jane’1), born 17 February 1829 in Kripplebush, Marbletown, Ulster County, New York;1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 died 2 March 1903 in Ellenville, Ulster County, New York.1, 6, 7 John married, ca. 1858, Esther O. Wood5 (born 13 October 1834 in New York, the daughter of James Wood and Elizabeth Van Etten;2, 3, 4, 5, 8 Esther died 27 December 1904 in Ellenville, Ulster County, New York8). John and Esther are buried in Pine Bush Cemetery, Kerhonkson, Ulster County, New York.1, 8

John supposedly had a lot of money. He owned property in Ellenville, N.Y., and apparently leased his farm in the Town of Rochester to his son Lewis. John owned what is known as the Colonie farm in Kerhonkson. He was a respected member of the Methodist Church in Kerhonkson (now the Federated Church of Kerhonkson).2

Esther’s Wood family was a well-established Reformed Church family in the Accord area. She met John in Mettacahonts, a location in Kerhonkson.2

+15i. Gertrude A. Latimer, born ca. November 1859 in New York; died 21 January 1919. Married Eugene Gordon.
+16ii. Effie Wood Latimer, born May 1860 in New York; died 3 December 1926 in Montclair, Essex County, New Jersey. Married William Henry Bush.
+17iii. Sarah A. Latimer, born March 1862 in New York; died 4 February 1911 in Ellenville, Ulster County, New York. Married Harry R. Carver.
18iv. Lydia Latimer, born 15 March 1865;9 died 1 May 1871.9 Lydia is buried in Pine Bush Cemetery, Kerhonkson, Ulster County, New York.9
+19v. Lewis J. Latimer, born May 1867 in New York; died 2 April 1929 in Kerhonkson, Ulster County, New York. Married Inez Dunn.
+20vi. Emma Bell Latimer, born ca. October 1869 in Ulster County, New York; died 11 February 1936. Married James E. Geary.

14. Josephus Latimer3 (Lewis,2 Jenneke ‘Jane’1), born July 1849 in Ulster County, New York.10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 Josephus married, first, Annie _____ (born ca. 1861 in New York, parents not determined15). Josephus married, second, 27 January 1900 in Accord, Town of Rochester, Ulster County, New York, Ella Marie Quick22 (born March 1865 in New York, parents not determined;16, 17, 18, 19, 20 Ella died 2 September 1921 in Liebhardt, Town of Rochester, Ulster County, New York21).

Josephus being listed in the 1850 census at one year old indicates that he was born before 1850, probably in 1849. Two other census records (1855 and 1860) support his birth in or before 1850. His birth as shown in the 1900 census, July 1851, is apparently off by a year or two. No death record has been found for Josephus, but his wife remarried by 1905, suggesting he died between 1900 and 1905.

21i. Catherine Latimer, born 1900 in New York.15

Child adopted by Josephus Latimer and Ella Marie Quick:

22i. Gussie B. Latimer, born January 1900 in New York.16
+23ii. Peter Jacob Latimore, born 2 February 1901 in Accord, Town of Rochester, Ulster County, New York; died 19 September 1942 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. Married Cornelia Lemunyan.
24iii. Jason Latimer, born ca. 1903 in New York;17, 18, 19, 20 died 14 January 1923 in Town of Wawarsing, Ulster County, New York.23 Several articles in the Kingston Daily Freeman, one quoted below from 18 May 1922, describe Jason’s incarceration for assault:24 LATIMORE CONFINED IN NAPANOCH INSTITUTION Undersheriff Tunis Haulenbeck and Deputy Sheriff Anderson Ellsworth took Jason Latimore Wednesday afternoon to the Institution for Mental Defectives at Napanoch from the Ulster county jail. Latimore was indicted for criminal assault on a young woman at Leibhardt and on his plea of guilty several days ago was committed to the Reformatory, he not being mentally strong. Based on the date and place of his death, it seems likely that he died while incarcerated.

Latimer, born: 17 February 1829 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York; died: 2 March 1903 in Ellenville, Ulster County, New York [from record, which includes a note that he was “Born in Cripplebush which is a part of Brooklyn.” The source/author of this statement is not known, but if the “Cripplebush” part is correct, it almost certainly refers to Kripplebush, located in Marbletown, Ulster County, New York. The identification of this Cripplebush with the village of the same name in Brooklyn, New York, is likely coincidental and almost certainly erroneous. The record also provides the names and links to his wife and two daughters].

25i. Harrison Gordon, born December 1882 in New York.3
26ii. Esther Gordon, born August 1892 in New York.3, 4

16. Effie Wood Latimer4 (John,3 Lewis,2 Jenneke ‘Jane’1), born May 1860 in New York;2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 died 3 December 1926 in Montclair, Essex County, New Jersey.5, 6, 12 Effie married, ca. 1881, William Henry Bush7, 9 (born 5 September 1861, the son of William H. Bush and Catherine M. Bartholomew;7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15 William died 11 February 192412, 14). Effie and William are buried in Pine Bush Cemetery, Kerhonkson, Ulster County, New York.5, 14, 5, 6

Effie was believed to be a twin but the sibling didn’t survive. Effie was a tiny infant. It was said that her hand could fit through her father’s wedding ring, and her head could fit in a coffee cup. Effie died at the home of her daughter Maude on South Mountain Avenue, Montclair, NJ.5

William and Effie lived on a canal barge after they were married. It was there that William apparently was holding, and dropped, his son John who hit his head and was never well after that, even through adulthood. William had red hair, apparently drank a lot, and was temperamental (he was said to “bark like a dog”). William and Effie are buried in the Bush plot of the Pine Bush Cemetery. His grave includes a metal masonic marker, inscribed “A.J. Anderson Council, JR OUAM,” with the square and compass surrounding an arm and hammer symbol.5

27i. John Cornelius Bush, born 21 October 1882 in Kerhonkson, Ulster County, New York;7, 9, 10, 11, 16 died 17 December 1945 in Cottekill, Ulster County, New York.12 John C. was a farmer’s helper. He lived for a good while in Preakness, N.J. He chewed tobacco and drooled a lot. On a visit to Montclair, N.J., (to visit his sister Maude) he appeared as a substantial citizen, wearing a fine blue suit. He died in Cottekill, New York, at the Socialist Relief Society Old People’s Home where he was in charge of the chicken coops. Maude and Leo are buried in Pine Bush Cemetery, Kerhonkson, Ulster County, New York., 28

Maude was born in the Bevier house, Marbletown, Stone Ridge (now the Historical Society) while her father William worked that farm. In 1901, her parents William and Effie lived at the Shallbark farm (as it is now known) across from the Dutch Reformed Church in Accord. Maude saw the first train in the valley go down the valley from that farm, only a few years after the canal closed in 1898, and she saw the last train go down the tracks from the Brick House, Kerhonkson, where she later lived. William was living in the house in Accord when Maude got married in 1915 (she was married in the Methodist Church, Accord). He built a house in Maybrook, N.Y. (near Goshen and Middletown) while he worked on the railroad as a carpenter. William and Effie also lived in the house now occupied by Dr. Dobushak, across from the Rainbow Diner in Kerhonkson. Maude remembered how she and her cousin Sarah [Sarah Geary Christian] would get in a barrel together and roll down the hill behind this house, their heads knocking together the whole way. Another time, Maude and Sarah were playing in a hay cart and managed to tip it over, for which they were quite afraid of Maude’s brothers who would have to reload the hay wagon.
