Mrs. Marie Voelker died in her home, 12 Cottage place, Wednesday, at the age of 83 years. She was an old resident of the town. Her husband died some years ago.

Joseph emigrated in 1872 from Germany.4

Joseph is described as nice looking, nearly six feet tall, with light blue eyes, and a small mustache. He worked at various jobs, including a dye making apprentice at Oak’s Mill, a wool carder, a carpenter, and an employee at the Consolidated Safety Pin Company’s plant, according to family recollections, census records, and his obituary.4, 6, 7, 10

Joseph’s son, David (Percy David Voelker), indicated that he shared his birthday, August 4th, with his father.2

His obituary indicates that he was survived by his wife and four children. However, he actually had five surviving children at the time of his death: four at home, and his eldest child, Fannie, having married a few years before his death. A sixth child, Mary, died in a fire in 1902, according to family recollections.2, 7


Joseph G. Voelker.

Joseph G. Voelker of 12 Cottage St., employed at the Consolidated Safety Pin Company’s plant, died Saturday afternoon after an illness of several weeks from typhoid fever. He was a member of Court Bloomfield Centre, I. O. F., and was 47 years old. A widow and four children survive.

6. John J. ‘Jack’ Voelker3 (Joseph,2 John1), born 16 April 1897 in Essex County, New Jersey;2, 3, 4, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 died 8 November 1940.16, 17 Jack married, ca. 1921, Mae Cronin14 (born ca. 1901 in New Jersey, parents not determined;14 Mae died ca. 193817). Jack is buried in Bloomfield Cemetery, Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey.16

Jack’s brother David recalled that Jack’s wife Mae died around 1938, and that Jack died in 1940. Thereafter, their five children, whose names he remembered, were raised in a few different households, probably foster homes. He thought that one or more of the children eventually moved out west. David also recalled that their daughter Peggy contacted him by telephone from Columbus, Ohio, in 1983, and they had a somewhat awkward conversation.17

The 1940 US Census shows sons John and Charles living with a Tully family, while daughters Margaret (Peggy) and Joan were living with a Tracy family, the families living next door to one another, on 475 and 473 Valley Street, respectively, in Orange, New Jersey.

8. Josephine Caroline Voelker3 (Joseph,2 John1), born 24 July 1904 in Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey;3, 4, 12, 21, 25 died 18 August 1923 in Orange, Essex County, New Jersey; she died of typhoid fever.26 Josephine married, 20 November 1921 in New Jersey, William Passmore McGregor30 (born 18 July 1897 in New Jersey, the son of David McGregor and Nellie Birrell Patterson;27, 28, 29 William died 20 December 1976).

Josephine was said to be happy-go-lucky, and well-liked by her siblings. She attended but never graduated from Bloomfield High School, New Jersey.

Bill’s middle name was in honor of a Mr. Passmore who worked with, and was well liked by, his father David McGregor. Bill enrolled in the U.S. Navy on 19 May 1917 at New York, N.Y. His enrollment records indicate ‘height 5 feet 8 1/2 inches, weight 137 pounds, eyes brown, hair brown, complexion ruddy,’ and lists several personal characteristics and marks. He was discharged as a Seaman (provisional) when his four year enrollment expired, having served honorably with active duty from 20 September 1917 to 14 December 1918, i.e., during World War I. The nature of his active service is not known, although his enrollment card indicates a ‘sea’ qualification. He was awarded the Victory Button and Victory Medal without clasp. Bill lived much of his life in Highland Park, West Orange and Bloomfield, New Jersey, although after his first wife died he was out of touch with his family for over ten years (leaving his first daughter to be raised by his parents). Bill was an automobile salesman during his working life. When Bill finally retired in 1962, he and his third wife Leonette (nee Scales) were among the first two couples to move into Cedar Glen Homes, the first senior citizen development in Ocean County, New Jersey. He served as vice chairman of the Manchester Township, New Jersey, Planning Board for many years. He was also a member of the Manchester Township Republican Club and a member of Corinthian Union Lodge No. 11, Free and Accepted Masons, following in his father’s Masonic footsteps.

9. Percy David Voelker3 (Joseph,2 John1), born 4 August 1908 in New Jersey;4, 12, 15, 21, 31, 32, 33 died 24 September 1995.31, 32 Percy married Gladys M. Skinner (born 15 August 1909, parents not determined;15, 31, 34 Gladys died 15 August 199731, 34). Percy and Gladys are buried in Bloomfield Cemetery, Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey.31

David preferred using his middle name. His first name is his mother’s maiden name. He served in the U.S. Navy as a radarman in World War II on two heavy cruisers, the Boston and the Portland, both in the Pacific. He was stationed aboard the battleship Missouri when the peace treaty was signed with Japan. Afterward, David was a glass assembler for the Scientific Glass Corporation in Bloomfield, New Jersey, before retiring in 1973. David and Gladys had no children.17
