First Generation
1. Mae Cronin,1 born ca. 1901 in New Jersey (parents not determined);1 died ca. 1938.2 Mae married, ca. 1921, John J. ‘Jack’ Voelker1 (born 16 April 1897 in Essex County, New Jersey, the son of Joseph George Voelker and Margaret Percy;1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Jack died 8 November 19402, 10). Jack is buried in Bloomfield Cemetery, Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey.10

Jack’s brother David recalled that Jack’s wife Mae died around 1938, and that Jack died in 1940. Thereafter, their five children, whose names he remembered, were raised in a few different households, probably foster homes. He thought that one or more of the children eventually moved out west. David also recalled that their daughter Peggy contacted him by telephone from Columbus, Ohio, in 1983, and they had a somewhat awkward conversation.2

The 1940 US Census shows sons John and Charles living with a Tully family, while daughters Margaret (Peggy) and Joan were living with a Tracy family, the families living next door to one another, on 475 and 473 Valley Street, respectively, in Orange, New Jersey.
