Second Generation
2. David Montross Gazlay2 (Aaron1), born 12 February 1798 in Dutchess County, New York;1, 2, 3 died 3 May 1877 in Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut.1, 4 David married, 13 February 1868 in Webster, Worcester County, Massachusetts, Angeline Elizabeth Warner (née Gleason) 3, 10, 11 (born 9 March 1834 in Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut, the daughter of Guy Gleason and Pamelia Combs;3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Angeline died 1 March 1908 in Nahant, Essex County, Massachusetts5). David is buried in Grove Street Cemetery, Putnam, Windham County, Connecticut.1 Angeline is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nahant, Essex County, Massachusetts.5

While living in Chenango County, New York, David is listed as donating $3.00 to the New York Institution in 1827, undoubtedly in support of his brother John who was a deaf and dumb pupil there.12

As early as 1834, David was living in Nelson County, Kentucky, where he signed a petition sent to the U.S. Senate.13

On 8 September, 1838, while living in Jefferson County, Kentucky, David purchased eighty acres of land in Crawfordsville, Indiana, that were available from the sale of public lands. The property is described as “the North East quarter of the South East quarter and the South West quarter of the South East quarter of section three, in Township fifteen north, of Range Six West, in the District of lands subject to sale at Crawfordsville, Indiana, containing eighty acres.” It is unknown whether he ever lived on this land.14

David was a school teacher and principal during the establishment of the Louisville, Kentucky, public school system. The Legislature of Kentucky granted the first charter to the town of Louisville in 1828. In the month of March, 1829, John C. Bucklin, the first mayor of the city, recommended, in a message to the council, “the adoption of some well-digested system for establishing a permanent free school.” Mr. Manor Butler, a gentleman at the time widely known in the West as an able educator, was appointed principal teacher. For a period of five years the schools went on prosperously under the able superintendence of Mr. Butler. At the close of the school year, 1833-4, however, becoming dissatisfied with the Lancasterian Method of instruction, then very popular with the city authorities, Mr. Butler resigned his position as principal. David M. Gazlay, having recently arrived in Louisville from New York, succeeded Mr. Butler as principal and also had special charge of the Grammar School. During this same year, the Night School System was inaugurated in Louisville, which is credited with having the first night school and the first Superintendent of Schools in the United States. On October 22, 1834, a resolution was adopted ordering a night school to be opened on the first Monday in November and continue in session four months. This school was to be taught by the principals of the Grammar and Primary Departments of the city school, Mr. David M. Gazlay and Mr. Joseph Toy. Mr. Toy had been elected principal of the Primary Department of the city school in September. On February 21, 1835, Messrs. Gazlay and Toy made a report of the work of the night school for the session just closed. During the session, twenty-two boys had been in attendance studying reading, writing, and arithmetic. The night school was conducted for another four month session on 16 November 1835, with Mr. Gazlay as teacher. The session closed on March 12, 1836, with a total enrollment of twenty-four pupils. A majority of these were apprentices in the various shops in the city. With this session, the night school closed until 1842.15, 16

David apparently continued teaching in Louisville to at least 1851, as suggested by advertisements in several grammar and spelling books for Mitchell’s American System of Standard School Geography. The advertisements include testimonials by various educators, such as one in 1848 by D. M. Gazlay: “I have partially examined Mitchell’s Geography and Atlas, and am convinced that it is superior to Woodbridge or Olney both in arrangement and correctness, and have introduced it into my school.”17

He is probably the D. M. Gazlay who is listed in the US tax assessment list, residing in Division No. 3 of Collection District No. 3 of the State of Kentucky, 27 June 1863, and so he was apparently still living in Louisville, Kentucky at the time.18

David is listed as Montross Gasley in the 1865 New York census, living with his sister Sarah (Gazlay) Warner and her husband Benjamin. This is the only known public record where he is listed as Montross, which is understood to be his middle name based on an unpublished family history. It seems likely that David moved with Sarah and Benjamin to the north-eastern corner of Connecticut (“the quiet corner”) soon after 1865, possibly to be near their daughter-in-law Angeline (Gleason) Warner since their son Addison had died the previous year in the Civil War, leaving Abigail to care for their three year old daughter Pamelia.2

He married Angeline (nee Gleason) Warner in Massachusetts in 1868 and settled in Pomfret, Connecticut, where he spent his remaining years in retirement.

6. Sarah Sallie Gazlay2 (Aaron1), born April 1810 in Columbus, Chenango County, New York;2, 10, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 died 22 November 1902 in Woodstock, Windham County, Connecticut.24 Sarah married, 18 October 1832, Benjamin ‘Uncle Ben’ Warner2, 24 (born 22 July 1805 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, the son of Asahel ‘Axel’ Warner and Mary Kimball;2, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 Uncle Ben died 8 May 1907 in Woodstock, Windham County, Connecticut25). Sarah and Uncle Ben are buried in Grove Street Cemetery, Putnam, Windham County, Connecticut., 25

Sarah is found in some records as Sallie but in most records as Sarah. It is not clear if they are first and middle names or if one is a nickname.

Benjamin was the second oldest of nine children of Axel and Mary (Kimball) Warner. He and his wife Sarah Gazlay lived to celebrate their seventieth wedding anniversary. Benjamin was a tanner for over forty years, as well as being a farmer. He was a contemporary of every president after Washington. At the time of his death at the age of 102, Benjamin was the oldest voter in the State of Connecticut.25

+21iv. Rena C. Gazlay, born 1860 in New York; died 15 May 1935. Married (1) Charles L. Stimson Married (2) Lyman Parson Judson.

9. Charles M. Gazlay2 (Aaron1), born ca. 1815 in Otsego County, New York;10, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48 died before 1880. Charles married, first, presumably, Martha Ann _____ (born ca. September 1820 in New York, parents not determined;49, 50, 51, 52, 53 Martha died 23 February 1909 in Averill Park, Rensselaer County, New York54). Charles married, second, Catherine E. Cornell45 (born ca. 1833 in Chenango County, New York, parents not determined;45, 46, 47, 48, 55 Catherine died 12 July 1905 in Newburgh, Orange County, New York56). Martha is buried in Hillside Cemetery, Stephentown, Rensselaer County, New York.57

Charles M. Gazlay’s early life is sketchy. He is found in the 1850 census living in New Berlin, Chenango County, New York, with his mother, Abigail Gazlay, and two minors, David M. Gazlay and Mary C. Gazlay, who are presumed to be his children. Several records provide circumstantial evidence that their mother, and presumably Charles’ first wife, was named Martha Anna (maiden name unknown). Charles and Martha apparently lived in Rensselaer County, New York, where at least Mary Cornelia Gazlay was born, as indicated in the 1855 New York census. Various records link Charles, Martha, David and Mary individually to events and locations in Rensselaer County. Indeed, one record suggests that Charles was in Rensselaer County in 1845. A Troy, New York, newspaper article indicates that a Charles M. Gazley [sic] was indicted for passing counterfeit money, “five several times,” in a Grand Jury in Troy, in December 1845. He did not make an appearance, but apparently his bail was paid in the amount of one hundred dollars for each of the five offenses.58

Perhaps this prompted him to relocate to New Berlin, where he is found from 1850 to at least 1865 based on census records. One supposes that Charles and Martha divorced some time prior to 1850; Martha subsequently remarried at least once and possibly twice. Shortly after 1850, Charles married a woman named Catherine, with whom he had three more children: Henry M., Charlie M., and Georgina. An 1859 New York business directory lists Charles M. Gazlay as a retail grocer in New Berlin. By 1869 he, his wife, and youngest three children had relocated to Brooklyn, New York, when a Brooklyn directory lists Charles M. Gazlay as a carpenter. The 1870 census also lists him as a carpenter and living in Brooklyn with his family.

An advertisement for the grand opening of Gazlay’s Wine House in Philadelphia in the Philadelphia Inquirer on 22 June 1871 lists Charles M. Gazlay and Company, Proprietors. He is likely the Charles M. Gazlay who is found in Philadelphia city directories in 1871, working at a publishing company, and in 1872, working in a restaurant. The latter directory also lists David M. Gazlay, presumably Charles’ eldest child, working and living at a different address from Charles. David lived in Philadelphia with his family for several years before and after 1870, according to various records. There’s no indication whether Charles’ family was with him in Philadelphia during this time. Trow’s New York City directory of 1879 lists Chas. M. Gazlay in that city working in a liquor store, and again David M. Gazlay is listed in the same directory but at a different address and workplace.

Charles apparently died before 1880, as his wife Catherine is listed as a widow in the 1880 census, living in Old Saybrook, Connecticut with their daughter Georgiana, and no other records have been found after this time that mention Charles M. Gazlay.

Catherine apparently moved with her youngest daughter Georgiana to Old Saybrook, Connecticut, after her husband Charles died, as shown in the 1880 census. Newburgh, New York, city directories for 1891-1895, 1897-1898 and 1900-1903 list a Mrs. C. M. Gazlay, widow, or a Catherine Gazlay, widow, indicating that she relocated there. This aligns with the death record for a Catherine Gazley in 1905.

Wheeler and Malvia Russell;61, 62, 63, 66, 67, 68, 69 Sallie died 2 January 1917 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky66). Addison and Sallie are buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.66, 71, 71

The History of the Ohio Falls cities and their counties provides a comprehensive biography of Addison:72

Addison W. Gazley [sic, Addison M. Gazlay] was born at Edmiston [sic], Otsego county, New York, December 31, 1818. He was educated in the public schools and an academy near Rochester till his fourteenth year, when for five years he was a clerk in a store at Binghampton. In 1837 he borrowed $100 from his brother and started west. After visiting a number of the larger cities he came to Louisville, and soon found employment with Mr. A. Bayless, with whom he remained three years. Between 1840 and 1845 he divided his time between commercial affairs and the study of law, at the latter date was admitted to the bar, and one year later began practice in Louisville, where he has since labored. His professional life has been a success, affording him the means of discharging long-standing, burdensome debts, some of them contracted while a student, and one to his older brother dating back to his twelfth year. In 1874 he organized the Louisville Plate Glass company, and refusing the presidency, he accepted the vice-presidency. He has long been identified with the order of Masons. On the 11th of February, 1851, he was married to Miss Sallie L. Wheeler, daughter of Josiah Wheeler, of Oldham county, Kentucky. They have five living children. Mr. Gazley has had a busy and laborious life, but his pecuniary success and the eminence he has gained in his profession have given him ease and competency, with the esteem of all who know him, for his old age.

Addison’s obituary provides additional details of his professional life:65

An article in The New York Times describes the circumstances of Reginald’s drowning [his age is misstated in the article]:74 Summer Visitor at Sconset Drowned. Nantucket, Mass., Aug 26--At Sconset. Reginald Gazlay, twenty-four years of age. who had been visiting Major J. M. Wright of Louisville, Ky., and who was an expert swimmer, went into the water yesterday, though the sea was very rough and bathing was pronounced unsafe. He swam a long distance, but before he could reach the shore he became exhausted. Ewing Speed, another of the Summer visitors here, started out after him. This is the only known public record where he is listed as Montross, which is understood to be his middle name based on an unpublished family history.

Their ages and birth dates are believed to be incorrect in this census record based on other records (including the death certificate for Angeline). [Martha is believed to be the first wife of Charles M. Gazley; it is presumed that they divorced before 1850, and since Charles was apparently still living in 1865, the indication of “now widowed” on Martha’s census entry represents that she is divorced, since there is no explicit indicator for that. The indication of ‘niece’ for the relation to the head of the family may provide a clue to Martha’s identity and maiden name.]

20. Ellen Adelaide Gazlay3 (Orville,2 Aaron1), born 10 January 1844 in Norwich, Chenango County, New York;35, 36, 40, 42, 43, 46, 47 died 15 August 1919 in Gallup, McKinley County, New Mexico.47 Ellen married, 8 September 1864 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, Charles Edwin Palmer42, 46, 47, 49 (born 21 August 1842 in Pittsford, Rutland County, Vermont, the son of Thomas Haig Palmer and Johanna P. Fenton;42, 46, 47 Charles died 24 January 1906 in River Forest, Cook County, Illinois48). Ellen and Charles are buried in Forest Home Cemetery, Forest Park, Cook County, Illinois.47, 48

Ellen (known as Adelaide) moved to Benzonia, Michigan, after her husband Charles’ death, and she operated a small orchard there. On the return trip from Pacific Beach, California, where she had sought medical improvement, she was traveling by train with her sister Rena G. Judson. Ellen became ill during the trip, which took them across the Mojave Desert during the daytime, and she died from exhaustion in Gallup, New Mexico.47

Charles and his wife Ellen lived in Rutland County, Vermont, early in their marriage, and moved in the early 1880s to Chicago, Illinois. They were in the catering business, and Charles managed the tearoom at Marshall Field’s department store in Chicago up to 1906 when Charles died, the same week as Marshall Field. Marshall Fields developed the concept of a department store tea room. In the 1800s, it was considered improper for a lady to have lunch in a downtown restaurant while being unescorted by a gentleman. In 1890, when a Marshall Fields store clerk, Sarah Hering (or Herring) offered a chicken pot pie with a shopper, Fields store manager Harry Gordan Selfridge came up with the idea of opening a department store tea room so women could luncheon downtown during their shopping trips and avoid having to return home just for lunch. It is unclear which tea room Charles Palmer managed, but it may have been the original South Tea Room. It was certainly not the renowned Walnut Room, since that opened in 1907, the year after Charles’ death.47, 50

46i. Charlie Palmer, born ca. 1869;47 died ca. 1869.47 Charlie is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pittsford, Rutland County, Vermont.47

Stimson52 (born ca. March 1838 in Massachusetts, parents not determined;42, 52 Charles died 25 April 1906 in River Forest, Cook County, Illinois57). Rena married, second, 10 July 1910 in Benzonia, Benzie County, Michigan, Lyman Parson Judson53 (born 1840 in Ohio, parents not determined;53, 55, 56, 58 Lyman died 27 June 1932 in Benzie County, Michigan58). David Montross Gazlay3 (Charles,2 Aaron1), born 17 September 1835 in New York;59, 60, 61, 62 died 31 May 1895 in Nassau, Rensselaer County, New York.62, 63 David married, first, 4 November 1858 in New York, New York, Anna Sophia _____64 (born ca. 1835, parents not determined;64 Anna died 29 October 1859 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California65). David married, second, 22 April 1861 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California, Mary Jane Shepherd71 (born ca. 1829 in England, the daughter of John Shepherd and Sarah Davis;66, 67, 68 Mary died 27 February 1864 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York67, 69, 70). David married, third, Mary Malvina Jennings60 (born ca. 1845 in New York, parents not determined;60, 61, 72, 73, 74 Mary died 4 September 1921 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York75, 76). David is buried in Hillside Cemetery, Stephentown, Rensselaer County, New York.62 Mary is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.66, 77 Mary is buried in Hillside Cemetery, Stephentown, Rensselaer County, New York.75

David Montross Gazlay led a fascinating life—publisher, printer, restaurateur, patriot, husband, father—and died at the early age of 59 years. He left a legacy of innovation in advertising in city directories. David published several noteworthy directories, periodicals, and other publications, and he played a key role in California’s decision to align with the Union on the brink of the Civil War. David left only one natural descendant who lived to adulthood, a daughter, and no natural grandchildren; his two adopted daughters both grew to adulthood and had descendants, some to present day.

A detailed biographical sketch is presented here: David Montross Gazlay

Anna was apparently something of an entrepreneur, as evidenced by an announcement of her employment office, the only one exclusively for females and run by females, followed by over three months of advertisements, such as the one below, that ran both before and after her death.78

The references cited in the advertisement are interesting. Anna’s connection to Rev. Cheever is not known, but Anna met and became friends with Rev. Holbrook and his wife on their travels from the east coast to California. In fact, after Anna’s death (shortly following the birth of her third child, Anna Sophia Gazlay, who also died a few days later), Rev. Holbrook and his wife adopted and raised Anna’s two surviving children. The Mrs. M. O. Roberts mentioned as a reference is undoubtedly Caroline, the second wife of Marshall Owen Roberts, a prominent American merchant who founded and operated the U.S. Mail Steamship Company, and later purchased and operated the competing Pacific Mail Steamship Company. These companies provided cargo and passenger transport between New York and San Francisco, by way of the Isthmus of Panama and other intermediate ports. It may be that Anna met Mrs. Roberts on her travels, or at least found a supportive reference for Anna’s female employment office.

Identifying Mary’s birth surname as Shepherd is based on circumstantial evidence. What is known is that a Mary S. Bowker married David M. Gazlay in San Francisco on 22 April 1861, that a Mary Gazlay died on 27 February 1864 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, and that a Mary S. Gazlay (or Gazley) is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn in a lot belonging to the Shepherd family. This Mary Gazlay is believed to be David M. Gazlay’s wife. David, originally from New York, was known to be in California for several years starting in 1858, and returned to New York in late 1863 or early 1864, likely with his wife Mary.66

The name Mary S. Gazley tops the gravestone in Green-Wood Cemetery that also bears the barely readable name of Sarah D. Shepherd, who died on 20 May 1876 in Brooklyn. Sarah bought the grave lot in 1864, shortly before Mary’s burial, so one surmises that the lot was purchased specifically for that purpose. With both Sarah and Mary’s names appearing on the same gravestone, the presumption is that they were related, most likely as mother (Sarah) and daughter (Mary).66, 77, 79

Sarah Shepherd’s will names several children, including Sarah R., wife of William Bowker, residing in San Francisco (in 1876). Association of the surname Bowker with both Mary and Sarah, and both in San Francisco, seems more than a coincidence. It’s possible that sisters Mary and Sarah married Bowker brothers, but records suggest that John William Bowker first married Mary, and after her death married Sarah R.80

The sad funeral notice for both Mary and her daughter Carrie is shown below.75

Obituary Notice.

Mr. Zial R. Avery.

We record this week the sad death of Mr. Zial R. Avery, of New York city, who was killed on the Sixth avenue elevated railroad, last Saturday night. He was the son of the late Mr. Orrin Avery, of Cross River, and was 53 years of age. For the past ten years he has been a conductor on the elevated railroad in the city. Last Saturday night, having completed his work at midnight, he stepped off his train on the east side, between 145th and 155th street stations, and started across the tracks to take a down train home. As he did so he was struck by a locomotive on the centre track and instantly killed, the driving wheel of the engine cutting his body in two. He leaves a widow but no children.

The body was brought up to Katonah on Wednesday and taken to Cross River for burial. The funeral services were held in the Baptist Church at 11 o’clock, Rev. Frank Fletcher officiating.

The following year, his wife provided a fitting honor for Zial:101

Mrs. Cornelia Avery , of N.Y., spent a few days with her sister-in-law, Miss Sophronia Avery. During her stay she had a very pretty bronze monument erected to the memory of her late husband, Zial R. Avery.
