William and Effie lived on a canal barge after they were married. It was there that William apparently was holding, and dropped, his son John who hit his head and was never well after that, even through adulthood. William had red hair, apparently drank a lot, and was temperamental (he was said to “bark like a dog”). William and Effie are buried in the Bush plot of the Pine Bush Cemetery. His grave includes a metal masonic marker, inscribed “A.J. Anderson Council, JR OUAM,” with the square and compass surrounding an arm and hammer symbol.6
