Biography

William and Effie lived on a canal barge after they were married. It was there that William apparently was holding, and dropped, his son John who hit his head and was never well after that, even through adulthood. William had red hair, apparently drank a lot, and was temperamental (he was said to “bark like a dog”). William and Effie are buried in the Bush plot of the Pine Bush Cemetery. His grave includes a metal masonic marker, inscribed “A.J. Anderson Council, JR OUAM,” with the square and compass surrounding an arm and hammer symbol.10

  1. U.S., Civil War Widow’s Pensions, 1861-1910 (available at fold3.com), William H. Bush. Twenty-seven pages of the application for pension by his wife, Catherine Bush (also named as Catherine M. Bartholomew and remarried as Catherine B. Burger), age 31 (as of 23 September 1863), and living in Kerhonkson, NY, per several included documents. Various documents and affidavits provide vital details, including his death, and marriage dates and places, and enlistment date and place [20 or 21 August 1862 at Cape Vincent, NY].
  2. Find a Grave (website). Pine Bush Cemetery, Kerhonkson, Ulster County, New York, William W. Bush, born: 1861; died: 1824 (from record, which includes a note naming his parents; however, this is erroneous; his parents are William H. Bush and Catherine M. Bartholomew, based on information from his daughter Maude; and provides the name and link for his wife).

Bush, 17, New York, Oct. 1882; son Harry L. Bush, 15, New York, Feb. 1885; son Grant Bush, 10, New York, May 1890; daughter Maude Bush, 6, New York, Oct. 1893.

Bush (48, New York, farmer, general farm); wife of 29 years Ethel [sic, Effie] Bush (48, New York, 4 children, 4 living); son John C. Bush (20, New York, farmer, home farm). [They are living next door to Ethel’s brother Lewis Latimer and his family]

  8. U.S. Federal Census, 1920, New York, Orange County, Town of Montgomery, Maybrook, E.D. 132, Sheet No. 8A, William Bush, 48, New York, carpenter, house; wife Effie Bush, 48, New York; son John C. Bush, 37, New York, carpenter, house; son Grant Bush, 28, New York, carpenter, house; daughter Maude G. Bush, 26, New York. [Note: This census entry has several questionable details. William and Effie’s ages are low by ten years; Grant and Maude were both married in October and November 1915, respectively, so their listing here is puzzling.]
