Second Generation
3. William H. Bush2 (Nelly1), born 10 July 1833 in Town of Marbletown, Ulster County, New York;1, 2, 3, 4, 5 died 9 July 1863 in Fort Baker, Southeast, Washington DC.1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 William married, 17 June 1855 in Town of Denning, Ulster County, New York, Catherine M. Bartholomew7, 16 (born September 1838 in Ulster County, New York, parents not determined;10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 Catherine died 26 April 1918 in Town of Rochester, Ulster County, New York16, 17). William is buried in Palentown Cemetery, Town of Rochester, Ulster County, New York.2, 16 Catherine is buried in Pine Bush Cemetery, Kerhonkson, Ulster County, New York.16, 18

Civil War records indicate that William enlisted on 21 August 1862 at Cape Vincent, New York. He was mustered in as a private in Company C., First Battalion, known as the “Black River Artillery,” or the “Jefferson County Artillery.” His unit later became Company M, Tenth Artillery. William’s unit was assigned to garrison duty in the forts that formed the defense of Washington, D.C., specifically, on the southeast side of the Anacostia River. Civil War records list William H. Bush as having died of disease on 9 July 1863 at Fort Baker, Washington, D.C.6, 9

William’s granddaughter, Maude (Bush) Gazlay, understood William’s fate somewhat differently, based on recollections handed down to her: that William was wounded in the Civil war and spent his convalescence in Canada, and that his wife Catherine traveled to Canada to nurse him and bring him back to New York. Maude understood that they lived in Sundown (in the Town of Denning, Ulster County) in his final days.16

William’s death on 9 July 1863 is well documented in his wife Catherine’s pension application that includes affidavits from military officials. His parents are identified in a New York Town Clerk’s Register of men who served in the Civil War, Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York, as William Jr. and Nelly Bush, although the entry shows that he died in July 1865, not 1863. The same page in that register shows two of William and Nelly’s other sons, Henry W. and Alexander Philip, and the register indicates Marbletown as the place of birth for all three siblings. William’s residence is listed in the register as Denning (Town of Denning, Ulster County, New York). Catherine’s pension application gives her marriage to William as 17 June 1855 in Denning, which would explain his residence there.

William is buried in Palentown Cemetery, located in the northern corner of the Town of Rochester, New York. This cemetery was likely selected because his mother Nelly and three of his siblings were apparently living in or around Samsonville, Town of Olive, Ulster County, New York (per the 1860 US Census); the cemetery is about one mile from the center of Samsonville.

A few ambiguities and puzzling details emerge from the records. For example, William’s death year is variously given as 1862, 1863, 1864, and 1865, always with the same month and day. This is attributed to transcription errors and confusion as to William’s identity. In fact, a different William H. Bush in Ulster County is shown as having the same death date and place, although that person is shown as being in the 56th Civil War regiment. His parents are identified in other records as Isaac and Sally Bush, and he married, had a family, and died in 1893. Also, why did William enlist at Cape Vincent, which is in Jefferson County, New York, across the St. Lawrence River from Kingston, Canada? One record, a Civil War Muster Roll Extract, actually gives his birthplace as Canada. We think that his granddaughter Maude’s story about William’s convalescence in Canada may have some basis in fact. It could be that he lived briefly in Canada right before the Civil War, and then enlisted in nearby Cape Vincent. And Maude’s understanding of William living in Sundown (in the Town of Denning) may reflect his marriage there, as previously discussed.

After her first husband died, Catherine married Benjamin Burger, with whom she had no children. Both Catherine and Benjamin were referred to as grandparents by the Bush grandchildren. They lived on the lower Cherrytown Road. Benjamin kept a store in Pataukunk.16

William and Effie are buried in Pine Bush Cemetery, Kerhonkson, Ulster County, New York.10, 12, 2, 12

William and Effie lived on a canal barge after they were married. It was there that William apparently was holding, and dropped, his son John who hit his head and was never well after that, even through adulthood. William had red hair, apparently drank a lot, and was temperamental (he was said to “bark like a dog”). William and Effie are buried in the Bush plot of the Pine Bush Cemetery. His grave includes a metal masonic marker, inscribed “A.J. Anderson Council, JR OUAM,” with the square and compass surrounding an arm and hammer symbol.12

Effie was believed to be a twin but the sibling didn’t survive. Effie was a tiny infant. It was said that her hand could fit through her father’s wedding ring, and her head could fit in a coffee cup. Effie died at the home of her daughter Maude on South Mountain Avenue, Montclair, NJ.12

He lived for a good while in Preakness, N.J. He chewed tobacco and drooled a lot. On a visit to Montclair, N.J., (to visit his sister Maude) he appeared as a substantial citizen, wearing a fine blue suit. He died in Cottekill, New York, at the Socialist Relief Society Old People’s Home where he was in charge of the chicken coops. He was found dead of a heart attack.12 John is buried in Pine Bush Cemetery, Kerhonkson, Ulster County, New York.14

Maude and Leo are buried in Pine Bush Cemetery, Kerhonkson, Ulster County, New York., 28

Maude was born in the Bevier house, Marbletown, Stone Ridge (now the Historical Society) while her father William worked that farm. In 1901, her parents William and Effie lived at the Shallbark farm (as it is now known) across from the Dutch Reformed Church in Accord. Maude saw the first train in the valley go down the valley from that farm, only a few years after the canal closed in 1898, and she saw the last train go down the tracks from the Brick House, Kerhonkson, where she later lived. William was living in the house in Accord when Maude got married in 1915 (she was married in the Methodist Church, Accord). He built a house in Maybrook, N.Y. (near Goshen and Middletown) while he worked on the railroad as a carpenter. William and Effie also lived in the house now occupied by Dr. Dobushak, across from the Rainbow Diner in Kerhonkson. Maude remembered how she and her cousin Sarah [Sarah Geary Christian] would get in a barrel together and roll down the hill behind this house, their heads knocking together the whole way. Another time, Maude and Sarah were playing in a hay cart and managed to tip it over, for which they were quite afraid of Maude’s brothers who would have to reload the hay wagon. Maude was the executrix of her mother’s estate, and she periodically had to track down her brother John who was an inheritor, as was Stanley Bush (Maude’s nephew through her brother Harry), whom Maude also tracked down (in Panama) when he reached age 21.5

Leo and his wife Maude moved to Montclair, New Jersey, in 1918, where Leo was employed as personal chauffeur for Edwin Merton McBrier in Montclair. Leo was a long time member of South Presbyterian Church of Montclair, and later Grace Presbyterian Church.28
