First Generation
1.
John Henry W. Hespe,
1 born ca. 1835 in Bremen, Germany (parents not determined);
1, 2 died 22 January 1865.
1, 3 John married
Julia Ann _____2 (born ca. 1836 in Ireland, parents not determined
2, 4). John is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London, New London County, Connecticut.
1Henry is listed as a musician in the 1860 census and in the record book of interments at Fort Trumbull, Connecticut. The entry in this record book was made in 1879, listing his unit as 3rd US Artillery and date of death as 22 January 1865. The book also indicates that there was no post cemetery at Fort Trumbull and that interments were in New London cemeteries. In fact, he is interred at Cedar Grove cemetery, New London.3
One index at Ancestry.com shows that he drowned, but the actual source document has not been identified. His unit, the 3rd Artillery Regiment, served under the XXV Army Corps, 3rd Division, Artillery Brigade, at the second battle of Fort Fischer, North Carolina, 15-16 January 1865. The next reference to his unit is in February 1865 in Wilmington, North Carolina. It may be that he drowned sometime during the transit to Wilmington.
