Biography

Jo’s obituary indicates she was “later adopted by her arithmetic teacher, Winnie Gazley,” but the circumstances for her adoption are not known. She is shown with her birth parents in the 1930 US Census, and with her mother in the 1940 US Census, her father having died in 1936. Her mother died in 1946. If Jo was adopted before she became an adult, it may have been because her mother wasn’t able to continue raising her. It would have been unusual for Jo to have been adopted as an adult.2
