Joel’s obituary provides brief biographical details:7

Joel C. Fenton, a well known and highly respected farmer of Barstow’s Corners, near West Winfield, died in his home last evening, following an illness which had confined him to his bed since Wednesday, although he had been in poor health for some time. Death was due to heart trouble. Mr. Fenton was born in Brookfield, January 2, 1831. He attended the Old Winfield Academy, and resided in that section practically all his life. He was a member of the Methodist Church at West Winfield, and had a wide circle of acquaintances. He was a man of sterling qualities and kindly, charitable nature, and the news of his death will cause deep sorrow among those who knew him. He is survived by four sons, three daughters, two brothers, George Fenton of East Winfield and Milo Fenton of Leonardsville. His wife died about five years ago.
