James’ obituary provides an interesting biographical sketch:11

REV. DR. JAMES SHERWOOD DEAD.

He Succumbs at the Age of 77 Years to Paralysis.

Rev. Dr. James M. Sherwood, who has been for a number of years a well known writer on theological subjects, died on Wednesday night at his residence, 35 McDonough street. The immediate caused of his death was paralysis. On Friday of last week he was apparently in perfect health and attended a prayer meeting at the Trinity Presbyterian church, of which he was a member. While speaking there he was suddenly attacked and fell over. He was taken to his home at once, but never rallied.

Dr. Sherwood was born at Fishkill, N. Y., in 1813, on a farm. He was prevented by delicate health from pursuing a regular college course. He decided to study for the Presbyterian ministry and received instruction under the direction of the Rev. Dr. Armstrong. Dr. Sherwood was ordained in 1835 and appointed successively to pastorates at New Windsor and Mendon, N. Y. , and at Bloomfield, N. J. About twenty-five years ago his health again failed him and he came to this city. He became a member of the Brooklyn Presbytery, although not engaged in active pastoral work. He was one of the prosecutors in the celebrated Talmage case, which was tried before that body some years ago. His work in this city has been in the line of religiousy journalism. He was connected at different times with the National Preacher, the Biblical Repository, the New York Evangelist and the Eclectic Magazine. He started Hours at Home and for some years was its editor. At the time of his death he was the joint editor, with Dr. Arthur T. Pierson, of the Missionary Review of the World. The Homitetic Review was entirely under his editorial management and its high tone as a religious magazine is due for the most part to Dr. Sherwood’s literary superintendence. He was also the author of two works, the “History of the cross” and the “Life of John Brainerd.”

Dr. Sherwood leaves a widow and five children, three of whom live in this city at 35 McDonough street. One of his grandsons is J. Sherwood Seymour, the publisher of the New York Evening Post. The funeral services will take place this afternoon at 5 o’clock. The Rev. Dr. J. H. Montgomery, of Trinity Presbyterian church, will be in charge, assisted by Drs. Arthur T. Pierson and Hugh Smith Carpenter. The interment will be at Bloomfield, N. J., to-morrow morning.
