Gazlay and Pamelia Dailey;1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 died 1911.12, 13 Emma married, ca. 1865, George Jenkins Matteson8, 10 (born April 1844 in New York, the son of Charles A. Matteson and Lavonia Laura Jeffords;6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14 George died 12 April 192613). Emma and George are buried in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin, Chenango County, New York.13

George worked variously as a carpenter and a machinist, according to census records. He served for over two years in Company F, 114th Regiment, New York Infantry during the Civil War, discharged as a corporal.15

The notice is significant for the names of the individuals listed as Harriet’s next of kin. Although their relationships are not specified in the notice, they are identified as follows: William Gazlay (brother), Ann Baker (not yet identified), Harriet E. Kuhn (niece; daughter of Harriet’s sister Cordelia A. (nee Gazlay) Butterfield), George H. Butterfield (nephew; son of the same sister Cordelia), Mary Wheeler (niece; daughter of Harriet’s brother George C. Died in the village of New Berlin Sunday morning 26 February, in his 80th year. This obituary provides a key family link, indicating that a sister, Mrs. John Town, and a brother Mr. Wm. Gazlay, of Utica, are the only surviving children of the once large family of Alexander Gazlay. It also names two daughters, Mrs. George Matteson and Mrs. T. B. Wheeler, and indicates that their mother, his wife, is still living.

Lucia is buried in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin, Chenango County, New York.7 William is buried in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin, Chenango County, New York.7

Linn Edward ‘Lynn’ Matteson2 (Emma1), born 1 December 1873 in New York;2, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 died 24 March 1945.15 Lynn married, ca. 1920, Anna Deming13 (born ca. 1888 in New York, parents not determined;13, 14 Anna died 25 July 194115). Lynn and Anna are buried in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin, Chenango County, New York.15

4. May E. Matteson2 (Emma1), born 19 August 1876 in New Berlin, Chenango County, New York;2, 8, 10, 11, 12, 16 died 8 January 1959 in New Berlin, Chenango County, New York.16, 17 May married, 22 February 1911 in Chenango County, New York, Benjamin David Haight18 (born 1876, the son of Henry L. May was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and the Women’s Auxiliary, and also previously belonged to the Altar Guild. She was survived by her two nephews, Stanley R. Talbot of Haddonfield, New Jersey, and William H. Talbot of Syracuse, New York.16
