Cornelia and Gilbert’s marriage apparently broke down and culminated in Cornelia leaving the household in scandalous fashion, as told in an article in The Chenango American:21

Elopement.—The Wife of Mr. Gilbert Crumb, a respectable citizen residing on Mechanic Street in this Village, yesterday eloped—if this term may be applied to an open, defiant departure from her husband’s house and home, with Mr. Oliver Holcomb, who is the husband of an excellent and handsome wife. Their present whereabouts we have not learned.

Mrs. Crumb was about 23 years of age—and she leaves behind her an only child, a little boy five years old. Holcomb had been a border in the house of Crumb. Many persons will remember him for his feats in wrestling.

We passed Crumb’s house this morning, he was disposing of his furniture preparatory to breaking up house keeping and removing. He looked, what indeed he is a wo begone, wretched man, whose cup of bitterness and affliction was full--and unto whom comfort and happiness were to be, henceforth, strangers.

As Mr. Crumb was always a kind and indulgent husband, this exhibition of criminal infidelity on the part of the lady can be accounted for only through the hardiness of the times, which makes hard cases of many people—or through that spirit of mutability to which feminality whether in a state of singularity or connubiality, is proverbially subject. --Norwich Reporter.

Tefft of 11 Court Street, second class scout of Norwich Troop 64, has been awarded the Certificate of Merit of the National Court of Honor of the Boy Scouts of America. Young Tefft saved the life of his father, Deputy Sheriff William L. Tefft Jr., on February 21 of this year when the deputy fell asleep and a cigaret ignited his hair and clothing. The boy removed his father’s burning clothing, threw water on the blazing chair, and gave his father first aid while awaiting a doctor. Troop 64 scoutmaster Onslow Brown called Scout Tefft’s action “heroism, resourcefulness and skill commensurate with the highest ideals of scouting.” In a letter to the national boy scout court of honor, Dr. Martin H. Jacobi, who attended the injured deputy, said, “If it hadn’t been for his (Scout Tefft’s) courageous intervention, his father would have possibly died of more serious burns, suffocation or shock.” William Barone, local scout executive said it was the first time such an award has been given to a scout from this area. The certificate was presented to young Tefft on Saturday. Edward is buried in North Norwich Cemetery, North Norwich, Chenango County, New York.26
