Daniel was an 1851 graduate of Princeton, following which he earned his law degree and commenced the practice of law in Raleigh. He served in the Civil War in several regiments, rising to the rank of colonel, before being captured and subsequently paroled. He ran for public office starting in 1862 and held various offices in the state legislature and state superior court, culminating in his election as governor of North Carolina in 1889. He died after only two years in office, having occupied the new executive mansion only three months before his death.
