Family HistoryFamily History - William McGregor

Key:1.“+” before a child’s name indicates the child has their own entry in the next generation.
2.“born xxxx” indicates the child is under 18 years of age so the birth date is not shown.
This family history features William McGregor and 118 of his descendants down to the ninth generation.

First Generation
1. William McGregor,1 born ____ (parents not determined). William married, 10 March 1797 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland, Elisabeth ‘Betsy’ Thom1 (born ____, parents not determined).

William’s birth record has not been found, but he was probably born before 1780 if he was at least 17 years old when he married Elisabeth Thom in Dunfermline on 10 March 1797.1

Fifeshire parish records show the births and baptisms of five individuals in Dunfermline, all with parents William McGregor and Elisabeth Thom (spelled Tom in one case). Although the birth or baptism of David McGregor is not similarly shown in the records, his death registry indicates that his parents were William McGregor and Betsy Thom. The match of names between the parish birth records and David’s death registry strongly suggests these individuals are members of the same family, and therefore are so listed.

The witnesses listed in the parish records for the births and baptisms of the children below have some names in common, and may further support the relationships shown. Traditionally, the witnesses for Scottish births and baptisms were the two grandfathers, although other relatives or even the parish register keeper would serve as witnesses. For example, the birth/baptism entries for the eldest five children all list David McGregor, weaver in Dunfermline, as a witness. The second witness, each described as a weaver in Dunfermline, is respectively, Mungo McGregor, Henry Smeiton [spelling uncertain], William Inch, and Henry Dickey (witness for both twins, Agnes and Janet). The two Mcgregors listed as witnesses, David and Mungo, are quite possibly related to William. Also, another entry in the Fifeshire parish registers, for a contemporary of William McGregor, may be of particular interest. The entry reads:

David McGregor weaver in the ground of Pittencrief, and Janet Reid his wife, had a son born 30th May [1801] and baptised 7th June [1801] named Mungo, witnesses Andrew Reid labourer and William McGregor weaver Dunfermline.2

Possibly, this David McGregor and William McGregor are brothers, and perhaps they served as witnesses for the births of each other’s children. Also, each had a son named Mungo (an uncommon name even in the 18th and 19th century Scotland), along with the Mungo McGregor being listed as a witness. The recurrence of these names (Mungo, David, and William) may suggest relationships, and are strong candidates for further research.

Other than her marriage to William McGregor, nothing is known about Elisabeth Thom. Another Elizabeth Thom also lived in Dunfermline at the same time. There can be no doubt that they were not one in the same person, for the other Elizabeth Thom, daughter of George Thom and Elizabeth Wilkie, was married to Andrew Carnegie, the grandfather and namesake of the famous Andrew Carnegie, who emigrated to the United States in 1848, amassed his fortune in the steel industry, and whose philanthropy included establishment of countless libraries worldwide. Elizabeth Thom and Andrew Carnegie, senior, had 8 or 10 children (accounts vary) during virtually the same period that Elisabeth Thom and William McGregor had theirs, all in Dunfermline.

Second Generation
7. David McGregor2 (William1), born ca. 1812;1, 2 died 15 July 1898 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland.1, 2 David married, 6 December 1834 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland, Janet Sinclair4 (born ca. 1809, parents not determined;3 Janet died 11 May 1887 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland3). David is buried in Dunfermline Cemetery, Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland.1

David and Janet’s marriage is listed in the Fifeshire parish records as follows:4

David McGregor, weaver, Dunfermline, and Janet Sinclair residing there gave their names for proclamation in order to marriage [sic]: being regularly proclaimed and no objections made, their Certificate to that effect was granted.

David is again described as a weaver both on his death registry and in a newspaper biography of his son William. Weaving was a common profession in Fifeshire in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and was also a common profession among our McGregor ancestors.

Regarding David and Janet’s first two children, Fifeshire parish records state:5

David McGregor, weaver, Priory Lane, and Janet Sinclair his wife had twins born the 28th December 1835, baptised and the elder named Margaret, the younger William. Witness William McGregor and Robert Miller.

The witness is thought to be David’s father.

David was interred in the Dunfermline Cemetery on 16 July 1898 in lair V178. Two of David’s children, Margaret and William, and a daughter-in-law, Margaret Brown McGregor, are also interred in this and adjacent plot V177 although, curiously, David’s wife Janet is not interred with him. None of these McGregor family graves have headstones, according to cemetery officials.

8i. Margaret McGregor, born 28 December 1835 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland; twin;5 died 14 November 1908 in Stenhousemuir, Stirling, Scotland.6 Margaret apparently never married, based on the listing as “single” in the records of the Dunfermline Cemetery where she was interred on 14 November 1908 in lair V178.6 Margaret is buried in Dunfermline Cemetery, Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland.6
+9ii. William McGregor, born 28 December 1835 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland; twin; died 13 January 1933 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland. Married Margaret Brown.
+10iii. Elisabeth McGregor, born 25 January 1842 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland; died 27 January 1933 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland. Married Thomas Fraser.

Third Generation
9. William McGregor3 (David,2 William1), born 28 December 1835 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland; twin;1 died 13 January 1933 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland. William married, 5 December 1862 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland, Margaret Brown3 (born 29 December 1837 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland, the daughter of William Brown and Jean Semple;2 Margaret died 19 January 1903 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland).

William’s obituary provides an interesting summary of his life:4

Dunfermline’s Oldest Inhabitant

Death of Mr. W. McGregor

With the passing of Mr. William McGregor, whose death took place yesterday at his home at 26 Castleblair Park, Dunfermline has lost its oldest inhabitant. Mr. McGregor had reached the ripe old age of 97 and retained all of his faculties till the end. A native of Dunfermline, Mr. McGregor was associated during the whole of his working life with the linen industry, and was one of the remaining few who had witnessed the change from the hand-loom to the power-loom. Originally a hand-loom weaver himself, he was later in the employment of Erskine Beveridge &. Company, Limited. He was engaged in Dundee for a time and then went to Ireland where he spent seventeen years. Returning to Dunfermline he entered the employment of R.E. Walker Reid & Company, Ltd., as a yarn dresser at their Albany Works, where he remained until his retirement in 1910.

Covering such a long span of years, Mr. McGregor’s reminiscences of Dunfermline were naturally of a most interesting character, and on more than one occasion here have appeared in the columns of the Press his recollections of outstanding events in the history of the town. A keen student of Politics he at one time enjoyed the reputation of being the only workingman Tory in Dunfermline. Until advancing years prevented his pursuit of the pastime, angling was his principal hobby. Another hobby which claimed his attention was that of crayon sketching.

Mr. McGregor is survived by three sons, two of whom reside in America, the other being Mr. W.B. McGregor, designer, Dunfermline. A sister of the deceased gentleman, Mrs. Fraser, who resides in Dewar Street, is 91 years of age.

Another much longer Press article the following week indicates that, as a boy, William played with Andrew Carnegie, the world famous philanthropist who was also a Dunfermline native. Their respective parents were apparently very well acquainted. William and Margaret’s eldest son David was born in Dunfermline before they moved to Lisburn, County Down, Ireland. Their other children were born in Ireland.

Surviving artifacts associated with William include several photographs of him (1924-1930), a pencil sketch of a linen design (traditionally attributed to him although possibly the work of his son William B.), and a statement of his son David’s birth William signed many years after the fact (since it is also “witnessed” by his son William B.). William completed the purchase of plots V177 and V178 in the Dunfermline Cemetery on 22 July 1898, six days after his father was interred. William and Margaret are both buried there.

+12i. David McGregor, born 7 September 1864 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland; died 12 February 1944 in West Orange, Essex County, New Jersey. Married Nellie Birrell Patterson.
13ii. William Brown McGregor, born 26 March 1868 in Donacloney, County Down, Northern Ireland;5, 6 died 4 August 1945 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland.7 William was a damask linen designer by profession, but was an active amateur (and possibly professional) artist and photographer. His obituary in The Dunfermline Press provides an interesting synopsis of his life:7 The passing away last Saturday of Mr. William B. McGregor, damask designer, Foundry Street, Dunfermline, has removed a personality well known to many of the older members of the community. He served his apprenticeship with Erskine Beveridge & Co., Ltd., St. Leonard’s Works, and after a few years’ sojourn in the United States, returned to their employment. After some years he took up business on his own account in the town as a damask designer. Perhaps his best known piece of workmanship was the design of the “Robbie Burns” table cloth, manufactured by Erskine Beveridge & Co. Mr. McGregor was a keen member of the Dunfermline Art Club, and the annual exhibition was not complete without some of his exhibits. After his retirement from business a number of years ago, he took a great interest in photography and was a prominent member of the Dunfermline Photographic Association and regular exhibitor at their exhibitions. He was keenly interested in fishing and returned regularly from Loch Leven with well filled baskets. Durn the last few years, Mr. W. B. McGregor, who was 77 years of age, was a regular attendee at the Old Boys’ Club in Pittencrief Glen, and his favourite pastime was feeding the birds and squirrels. He was unmarried and is survived by his brother James, who is resident in the United States. William is mentioned in over half of the “Dunfermline Press” articles about the Annual and Triennial Dunfermline Art Club exhibitions from 1911 through 1945. Many of his pictures are named or described, several including valuations since they were either sold or given as prizes in Art Union drawings. William was skilled in various artistic media, including oil, watercolor, ink, chalk, and possibly crayon. Surviving artifacts include a letter to his brother David dated 7 January 1938, and several examples of his artwork. A water color painting of a pastoral scene with grazing sheep, signed ‘W.B. McGregor 1914,’ is in the possession of David Mailler. Several other of William’s works are in the possession of Lee Gazlay, including a watercolor coastal scene (likely of Largo Bay, Fifeshire, Scotland, a popular venue of William and other Dunfermline Art Club members), signed ‘W.B. McGregor 1914’ (which for years was displayed on the porch wall of William McGregor in his Toms River home); a splendid oil painting of a boy scout; an ink sketch of a lake scene (the latter two undated); and several photographs taken (and presumably developed and printed) by William. A search of shops and records in Dunfermline, including contact with the Dunfermline Art Club, unfortunately did not reveal more examples of his work. William begins his holographic Last Will and Testament (drafted 29 May 1937 and executed 11 October 1945), “I, William B. McGregor, hereby bequeath to Mr. & Mrs. John Fraser, Fitzroy, Crossford all my pictures as are at present on the walls of this house…” suggesting the importance he placed on his artistic creations. He left the rest of his estate to Miss Ann Inches, who is shown as living at his address in Dunfermline, and who acted as executrix. William was interred 7 August 1945 in lair V178, Dunfermline Cemetery.
14iii. Jane Semple ‘Jeanie’ McGregor, born 1 June 1871 in Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland;8, 9, 10 died 26 April 1929 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland.11 Little is known of Jeanie, except that she apparently resided with her father throughout her adult life, occupying her time as his housekeeper, and leaving a modest estate of £110 in various insurance proceeds and investments. Jeanie is buried in Dunfermline Cemetery, Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland.11
15iv. Janet Sinclair McGregor, born 1 March 1875 in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland;12 died 18 October 1875 in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.13 Family tradition holds that Janet died young.
+16v. James Brown MacGregor, born 5 March 1877 in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland; died 1948. Married Julia C. Morton.

10. Elisabeth McGregor3 (David,2 William1), born 25 January 1842 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland;14 died 27 January 1933 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland.15 Elisabeth married, 28 June 1867 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland, Thomas Fraser16 (born ____, parents not determined).

Elisabeth’s obituary provides brief details:15

Mrs. Thomas Fraser, who was 91 years of age, died at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. Henry Allen, at 81 Dewar Street, Dunfermline yesterday afternoon. She had been in failing health for about a year. The deceased, whose maiden name was Elisabeth McGregor, was a sister of M. Wm. McGregor, who died at Castleblair Park a fortnight ago at the ripe old age of 97 years. Her husband, who predeceased her many years ago, was employed in one of the Dunfermline linen factories.

James and Julia are buried in First Baptist Cemetery, Cape May Court House, Cape May County, New Jersey.14, 15, 14, 23, 25

As an adult, James used the spelling ‘MacGregor,’ possibly to reflect his Irish birth. His descendants use that spelling. James immigrated to the United States circa 1897 as indicated in several census records, although his name has not been found among passenger lists. In the 1900 census he is listed as a machinist living with his brother David’s parents-in-law, George and Euphemia PATTERSON. James, Julia, and their only child David were living in the town of Colonie (near Albany), New York, at the time of the 1920 census, which shows James again employed as a machinist, and Julia working as a school teacher, her life-long profession. In April 1946, James and Julia were residing in Ocean City, New Jersey, and they were visited by Robert and Doris (McGregor) Gazlay after their wedding, although James was not home during the visit.

Bill’s middle name was in honor of a Mr. Passmore who worked with, and was well liked by, his father David McGregor. Bill enrolled in the U.S. Navy on 19 May 1917 at New York, N.Y. His enrollment records indicate ‘height 5 feet 8 1/2 inches, weight 137 pounds, eyes brown, hair brown, complexion ruddy,’ and lists several personal characteristics and marks. He was discharged as a Seaman (provisional) when his four year enrollment expired, having served honorably with active duty from 20 September 1917 to 14 December 1918, i.e., during World War I. The nature of his active service is not known, although his enrollment card indicates a ‘sea’ qualification. He was awarded the Victory Button and Victory Medal without clasp. Bill lived much of his life in Highland Park, West Orange and Bloomfield, New Jersey, although after his first wife died he was out of touch with his family for over ten years (leaving his first daughter to be raised by his parents). Bill was an automobile salesman during his working life. When Bill finally retired in 1962, he and his third wife Leonette (nee Scales) were among the first two couples to move into Cedar Glen Homes, the first senior citizen development in Ocean County, New Jersey. He served as vice chairman of the Manchester Township, New Jersey, Planning Board for many years. He was also a member of the Manchester Township Republican Club and a member of Corinthian Union Lodge No. 11, Free and Accepted Masons, following in his father’s Masonic footsteps.

Josephine was said to be happy-go-lucky, and well-liked by her siblings. She attended but never graduated from Bloomfield High School, New Jersey.

Alice was a secretary to the vice president of the Mohawk Savings and Loan Co. in Newark, New Jersey, for eight years until her retirement in 1973. Previously she was a secretary for the Kearny Federal Savings & Loan Co. She lived in Kearny for 45 years, the last several at the home of her daughter Ruth.24

Leonette claimed she weighed only 2 1/2 pounds at birth although this is doubtful given the state of medical procedures at that time. She worked for Westinghouse Corporation for most of her adult life until her retirement in 1962. Leonette was an astute investor in blue chip stocks, and Bill and Leonette were able to maintain a comfortable lifestyle in retirement primarily due to her investments. They enjoyed traveling, especially to New England.
