Report of the Memorial Committee, Pages 178-179, Mrs. Sarah L. Papineau, maiden name Green, died 20 May 1891, aged seventy-nine years. The article provides vital and biographical details of her life. Born 20 March 1812 in Sennitt, Cayuga County, New York, she married Daniel Papineau of Wayne County, New York when she was about twenty years of age. Two daughters, Jeannette and Henrietta (Mrs. W. S. George). The article indicates that she was a strong abolitionist, and that her home in Detroit was the refuge of many black men and women. She was also deeply religious, an active and earnest Unitarian.

Gazley and Harriet E. _____;3, 8, 9, 10 George died 12 October 1865 in Rio Vista, Solano County, California8). Henrietta married, second, 5 September 1876 in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan, William Selden George1, 13 (born 3 March 1825 in Derby, Orleans County, Vermont, parents not determined;4, 5, 12 William died 17 December 1881 in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan12). Henrietta is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan.1 George is buried in Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose, Santa Clara County, California.8 William is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan.12

George followed his father to Auburn, Placer County, California. He took over proprietorship of the American Hotel in 1860 after the retirement of his father.14

George was one of the many people killed in the explosion of the steamer Yosemite on 12 October 1865. His death notice reads:8, 15

In Rio Vista, Oct. 12th, from injuries received by the explosion of the steamer Yosemite, George H. Gazley, of San Francisco, formerly of Pultneyville, Wayne County (N.Y.), aged 37 years.

Another death notice from The Commercial Press, Pultneyville, New York, reads as follows:16

George H. Gazlay, son of the late George W. Gazlay formerly of this place was killed Oct. 19th by the explosion of the steamer Yo Semite [sic] on the Sacramento river, Cal. His age was 37 years.


3. Jennett Papineau2 (Sarah1), born 1835 in New York;2, 4, 17 died 1874.17 Jennett married, 1866, William Selden George12 (born 3 March 1825 in Derby, Orleans County, Vermont, parents not determined;4, 5, 12 William died 17 December 1881 in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan12).
