Charles M. Amsden was born 12 April 1849 in Belvedere, Boone County, Illinois, the son of Noah C. and Sarah (Hulbert) Amsden. He was educated in public schools in Dubuque, Iowa, and attended business college in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He worked in the produce commission house and in the office from the time of leaving school until he removed to Minneapolis in 1879, except for two years in the general merchandise business at LEmars, Iowa. He was with Pullsbury & Hulbert Co., Minneapolis, until 1882, and then was with the Pillsbury & Hulbert Elevator Co., from 1882 to 1885 when the firm was changed to the Minneapolis & Northern Elevator Co., of which he was president and treasurer. He was a managing director of the Pillsbury-Washburn Flour Mills Co., and director of the Swedish American National Bank. He was a member of the Minneapolis, Minikahda, and Lafayette clubs. He attended Plymouth Congregational Church.5
