John served in the U.S. Navy in World War II aboard two destroyers. He survived the sinking of the USS Chevalier in the South Pacific. He earned a total of 11 battle stars for participation in the Asiatic Pacific and Campaign and the Philippine Liberation. In 1964, John became the first full time police officer in Montville, and he retired in 1986. He was a member of several organizations, including the New London County Fire Chiefs Association and the New London County Detectives Association. He was voted Citizen of the Year as a lifetime member of the Montville Veterans of Foreign Wars.1
