Although Elizabeth Montross is clearly identified in Montross: A Family History as having married Andrew Sutton, son of Caleb Sutton and his wife Abby Pell, Elizabeth’s baptism date of 1721 means she would have been 45-70 years old for the births of the children attributed to her and Andrew. This is highly unlikely, except perhaps for the first few children. Andrew, on the other hand, is probably the childrens’ father, having been born circa 1747. It seems more likely that Andrew married a second time, and that the children were born of this second wife, although no evidence has been found to support this theory.
Another possibility is that Montross: A Family History is incorrect in identifying the Elizabeth Montross who was married to Andrew Sutton and who was apparently the mother of their children. Assuming that all of the children were the product of one mother, she would likely have been born between 1745 and 1752 based on the birth years of the children and that the mother would have been no younger than about 16 at the birth of her first child, and no older than about 45 at the birth of her last child (ages based on an informal review of several websites showing various birth statistics). This would make her birth year about the same as Andrew Sutton’s presumed birth year, 1847, give or take a few years.
