Biography

Ralph Leavenworth Gazlay was teaching school in Cleveland, Ohio, when he was married. He moved to South Edmeston about 1840. He learned the shoemaker’s trade and worked at it until near the end of his life. In 1856 he purchased and hired some land, and started growing fruit trees in addition to his other trade. This was at South Edmeston, N.Y. In 1859 the family moved to Garrettsville, N.Y. where he worked at his trade and gardening until failing health compelled him to go to Faxton Home in Utica, where he died Jan. 1884 at the age of 76. He was buried at South Edmeston. He was an earnest Christian, a member of the Presbyterian Church at New Berlin.7
