Jacob enlisted in the Army at Kingston, New York, on 10 September 1861 in Company D, 80th New York Volunteers. He died of typhoid fever on 10 August 1863 [some sources say 11 August] at Camp Convalescent, Virginia, located near present-day Old Town Alexandria (one source says he died at Fort Barnard, Virginia, about four miles north of Camp Convalescent).4
