James Dunbar settled in Fulton County, in 1849. He was among the first settlers, and cleared the farm on which he lives. He was born in Connecticut and married in Sandusky County, Ohio, in 1840, to Mary A. Gleason, daughter of Alonso and Mary Baker Gleason both natives of New York where the former died in 1848, and the latter in 1861. Mrs. Dunbar was born in Connecticut, in 1817 [sic, this refers to Mr. Dunbar, not Mrs. Dunbar. She was born in New York c.1824]. Their children are: William W. (deceased), Gurden R. B. (deceased), Martha E. Adaline A., Mary Amelia (deceased), Orin R., Mary A., and William Sherman. The parents of the subject of this sketch, James and Mary (Beebe) Dunbar, were natives of New London, Connecticut, where the former died in 1870, and the latter in 1845. William W. Dunbar was a member of Company K, 38th Regiment O.V.I., and died near Chattanooga, of a fever, November 19, 1863. Gurden R. B. was a member of Company K, 38th Regiment O.V.I. A Standard History of Fulton County, Ohio, states that James Dunbar, born in Connecticut in 1817, came from Erie county, Ohio, where he was married in 1841 to Mary Ann Gleason, and settled in Clinton Township in 1844. He became one of the substantial residents of the township, and lived in it for fifty-six years, death coming in 1900. His wife died in 1892.5
