Mary Jane Davis,1 born ca. 1878 in Canada, the daughter of Richard Davis and Annie Frier;1, 2, 3 died 1958.1 Mary married, 19 May 1919 in Los Angeles, California, Charles Ogden White2, 14 (born May 1850 in Tioga County, New York, the son of Charles Bates White and Nancy A. Smith;2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 Charles died 24 July 1937 in Cherry Grove, Washington County, Oregon4). Mary and Charles are buried in River View Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.1, 4

A brief article in the Ithaca Daily News dated October 9, 1912 provides interesting details on Charles’ life and travels.

MR. WHITE TO RETURN WEST

AFTER LONG VISIT EAST

Charles O. White of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, who has been in the east about a year, expects to return home Saturday. Mr. White came here to visit his cousin, Mrs. Hattie A. Dale, who died last December. After his visit he made the homeward trip by the southern route and had only been home a week when he was called east on business and while on his way was informed of the death of Mrs. Dale. Since then he has been here on matters connected with the closing of her estate, he being one of the nearest heirs.

Mr. White went west from Tioga County 42 years ago, going first to Chicago. He then returned to WIllseyville where he had a chair factory for two years, which he sold to H. M. Hibbard of this city. Going west at that time he located in Tacoma, Washington, afterwards going to Myrtle Creek, which has been his home for many years.

Last year’s visit here was the first Mr. White had made in 27 years. He is a large property owner at Myrtle Creek and also the owner of a 100-acre apple orchard. In politics he is a Republican and when he first went to Douglass County there were but seven Republicans in the county. Last year he ran for member of assembly on his party ticket and was defeated by only four votes. He is also given credit for having installed the first hydraulic steam engine ever used for mining in this country. The cost of this engine was $8,000.15

The birth date is significantly different from birth dates derived from US Census records and her marriage certificate (with Charles Ogden White). Although her parents are not identified in her findagrave entry, the John James Davis in the same cemetery shows, in his findagrave entry, his death certificate with his parents listed as the same as Mary’s parents on her marriage certificate (although the mother’s maiden name varies slightly. Finally, they are buried in the same Section 109, Lot 294. John is therefore believed to be Mary’s brother.

  5. Find a Grave (website). Smith Valley Cemetery, Willseyville, Tioga County, New York, Charles White and Francis A. White [separate records]: Charles O. White / Born May 1850 / Francis A. White / Born May 10, 1852 [from gravestone]. This is believed to be Charles Ogden White and his first wife Francis A. The inscriptions are on the large monument in the White plot, and includes his parents Charles B. White and Nancy A. Smith [see their entries]. It is thought that they were included on the monument long before they died, but that they are not buried there, since there are no death dates inscribed. Immediately below the inscription for Francis [where her death date would be] is: William G. Black / 1911-1979, apparently a spouse of a White descendant.
