MILO B. FENTON

DIED THIS MORNING

Aged and Respected Residence Passed Away After An Illness of Three Weeks.

In the death of Milo B. Fenton, which occurred this morning at his home, No. 1 Union Avenue, Utica loses one of its oldest and most esteemed residents. His friends, and especially the children whom he knew and loved in the neighborhood, will miss him sorely for his kindly ways and gentle disposition had endeared him to their hearts.

Mr. Fenton was born in the town of Columbus, June 16, 1828. His early life was spent there, but later he made his home in Richfield.

About forty years ago he came to Utica and for many years conducted a grocery business at the corner of Court street and West avenue. December 28, 1859, he was married to Mary Clark of Winfield, who died in November, 1886. Several years afterward he was married to Mary E. Metcalf of this city. He leaves besides his widow a daughter, Mrs. William A. Lloyd of Jacksonville, Fla.; two step-sons, Herbert F. and Nelson W. Metcalf, and four grandchildren, also three brothers, Joel C. of Richfield, George of East Winfield, and Miles Fenton of Leonardsville.

Mr. Fenton was converted at the age of 16 and throughout all the years followed closely the Christian teaching. As a member of Dryer Memorial M. E. Church he proved faithful and earnest and the last Sunday he attended church, about a month ago, enjoyed the service.

To the very last his mind was keen and active and although he retired from business many years ago, he never lost his interest in public affairs, and kept in touch with current events, manifesting a wonderful strength in mind and body at his advanced age.

Mr. Felton was taken ill about three weeks ago and since then had failed rapidly. During his illness he suffered patiently and at last entered into rest with the same quiet trust and hope that had blest him for so many years.

Mary’s obituary provides brief details of her life and character:18

OBITUARY.

MRS. MARY A. FENTON.

Died, Nov. 24, 1886, at the residence of Dr. George B. Palmer, East Hamilton, Mary A. Fenton, of Utica, N. Y., aged 51 years. Mrs. Fenton was the youngest daughter of Isaiah Clark. She was born in Plainfield, Otsego county. Was married to Milo B. Fenton about 25 years ago, and for the last 17 years had resided in Utica. The last ten years of her life have been of considerable physical suffering from sickness, she having been in poor health for the greater portion of that time. In all this affliction and suffering she developed a character which endeared her to all who knew her intimately. Her entire forgetfulness of self and untiring devotion to the interests of others, her remarkable patience and uncomplaining endurance of severe pain, touched all who knew her. Modest and quiet in her religious professions, she showed in her daily life her faith by her works, and it needed not mere verbal profession to satisfy those who knew her that she was indeed a Christian. She was buried Nov. 27, at West Winfield, N. Y., by the side of her sister, and we laid her to rest in the confident hope of a glorious resurrection. In her last days she was cared for by her sister, and the tender hands and warm hearts of some neighbors who knew and prized her, assisted to render her last days as comfortable as possible. But she is gone, and will be most sorely missed by her loving husband and lonely daughter, as well as brother and sisters who remain, and all those near and dear friends to whom her presence always brought sunshine and joy.

JOHN B. EATON

Death of a Well-Known Resident of This City.

The death of John B. Eaton, Wednesday, at his home on Seymour avenue, removes an honorable citizen and excellent man, who was long a resident of Utica.

John Burdwin Eaton was born in West Winfield, Herkimer county, 75 years ago. He received his education there and when a young man entered the employment of his brother, James Eaton, in his match factory. While living there Mr. Eaton married Miss Frances Hay.

In 1863 he came to Utica. His brother’s business had been consolidated with that of the Diamond Match Company, and with his concern Mr. Eaton now allied himself. His work was buying lumber and in this capacity he was an expert. For 20 years Mr. Eaton worked at this business until failing health necessitated his withdrawal from active life.

After the death of his first wife, Mr. Eaton married Mrs. Lucinda Wilcox, of Utica, who with four children, Mrs. Laura Youlen, of Rochester, Mrs. Helen Bussey, of Denver, Col., Charles Hewitt Eaton, of Longmont, Col., and Mrs. Alice Jennings, of San Francisco, Cal., and a sister, Miss Sarah Eaton, of Utica, survive. Mr. Eaton was an uncle of Fred D. Eaton, of New York, Mrs. Josephine Marquisee and Miss Annie Eaton, of Syracuse, and the late J. Emory Eaton, of New York, former residents of Utica.

His funeral is being held this afternoon from the house of his sister, Miss Sarah Eaton, on Dudley avenue.
