7Kirke graduated from high school in Albion, New York, in 1893. He entered the investment bond business around 1901, and was a recognized leader in this field in Detroit and surrounding areas. In 1906 he created the firm of Bumpus & Company for the trading of municipal bonds. Kirke served in the Michigan National Guard during World War I, and during the same period he was in charge of Liberty Loans and other financial activities in southern Michigan as a special representative of the Federal Reserve Bank.5
