First Generation
1. Elizabeth Buck,1 born 14 October 1803 in Trumansburg, Tomkins County, New York, the daughter of William Sherman Buck and Barentha York;1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 died 11 February 1899 in Pratt, Pratt County, Kansas.1, 7 Elizabeth married, 15 April 1827 in Hamilton County, Ohio, Aribert Gazlay8, 12, 13 (born 10 December 1797 in Dutchess County, New York, the son of James Gazlay and Huldah Carter;2, 3, 5, 8, 9 Aribert died 22 May 1885 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio8, 10, 11). Elizabeth inherited largely, the disposition and characteristics of her mother. Among these were, pluck and determination, --qualities which always furnish a wife and mother with a most formidable equipment, to cope with the innumerable obstacles she must meet in her pathway of duty. While living with her parents near Cincinnati, Elizabeth first met her future husband, Aribert Gazley, who had but recently emigrated from Dutchess County, N. Y. The twain, after a brief courtship, were married early in April 1827. The country around Cincinnati, was still comparatively a wilderness. Land was however cheap, and the broad Ohio River adjacent, furnished a fair market for wood and timber, with the money for which the settler, by dint of hard labor and exposure, might, in time, pay for it. No sooner had the marriage knot been tied than the young couple shouldered their scanty household outfit and plunged into the wilderness about fifty miles below Cincinnati, in what is now Switzerland County, Ind., bent upon carving out a home for themselves and their posterity. They found a partly cleared but abandoned tract, which they purchases and settled down to housekeeping after a fashion. The husband shouldered his axe and chopped wood, which, with a yoke of cattle, he hauled to the river bank and sold to the steamboat craft plying up and down the Ohio, devoting the proceeds to paying for his land. The dock from which he shipped his wood took the name of Gazley’s Landing, which it retained as late as 1850. It was as well known to boatmen and travelers as any place on the river. Old boatmen still living are willing to testify that Mr. Gazely always supplied good wood from his yards at honest prices. Later on in his life he conducted the mercantile business with success, purchasing his goods in New York principally. Besides performing all the duties of a prudent and industrious housekeeper, Elizabeth did her full share of outside work. Her husband always bore witness, with pride, that she did full as much as he did towards paying for the farm. She usually had butter, milk, eggs and other farm products which she sold to the boatmen for cash, this being at that time about the only market for such products, and the proceeds usually went to liquidate the farm and other debts. Her wise counsel and words of encouragement greatly aided her husband in fighting the battle of life. In 1867, she and her husband removed to Cincinnati, where Mrs. Gazley still resides, with their only son Carter. At this present writing (1885) she is, both bodily and mentally, in excellent health, and has undertaken a visit to her relatives in Illinois. In 1884, Mr. Gazley was stricken with paralysis, which confined him to his room, and seriously impaired his mental powers; he continued to grow weaker, both physically and mentally, until the 23d of May, 1884, when he breathed his last, without a struggle.8

Elizabeth’s obituary elaborates on her life and character:7

Elizabeth Gazlay was born near Trumansburg, N.Y. October 14, 1803. On April 7, 1827, she was married to Aribert Gazlay. They immediately settled near Patriot, Ind. In 1890 she broke up house-keeping and removed to Pratt to reside with her granddaughter, Mrs. Blanche G. Apt. She died Saturday, February 11, 1899. The funeral services were held at the Apt home, conducted by Rev. Gragg. She was the last survivor of a family of thirteen children. Her husband Aribert Gazlay died at Cincinnati, Ohio in May 1885. She was educated a Presbyterian, but early after she moved to Indiana, she became a Universalist, and remained in that belief to her death. She was the mother of only one child, Carter Gazlay, who survives her. Although her immediate family was small there was no time in her active life when she was not taking care of some persons children and she raied and cared for some ten children other than her own.

Thus, briefly is told the story of one who lived for more than 95 years a life of activity, and full of good works. “Till like a clock worn out with eating time. The weary wheels of life stood still.”

Second Generation

Carter and Elizabeth are buried in Patriot Cemetery, Patriot, Switzerland County, Indiana.1

Carter Gazley, when young, was drilled in surveying by his uncle, Asaph Buck, and studied law for three years with his uncle, Judge Theo. Gazley, at Lawrenceburgh, Ind. He practiced law in Indiana and Ohio until after the breaking out of the Rebellion, when he raised the 37th Indiana Vols., of which he was appointed Colonel, and did active service about sixteen months. The regiment was sent to South Carolina, and thence into the Army of the Ohio (8th Brigade, 3d Division), Maj. Gen. Mitchell commanding. The regiment participated in the capture of Huntsville and the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, holding that road and the country north to Fayetteville, Tenn. The Division was considered part of Buel’s army. Upon the close of his service, Mr. Gazley returned to the practice of law, at Cincinnati, Ohio. Carter was at one time a leader at the Cincinnati bar, his practice amounting to $8000 per annum. He was attorney for numerous railroad corporations. Ill health has compelled him to retire from active life.11

An interesting anecdote about Carter during his service in the Civil War appears in Anecdotes, Poetry, and Incidents of the War: North and South. 1860-1865, collected and arranged by Frank Moore:12

A Colonel on Guard — A Lieutenant in one of the Ohio regiments was making a detail of men to guard a lot of army stores captured from the enemy. He approached a crowd of men all wearing overcoats such as Uncle Sam gives his boys, and selected four or five for special duty. It happened that Lieutenant-Colonel Gazley, of the Thirty-seventh Indiana, was in the crowd, and was selected by the Lieutenant. This was fun for the Colonel, and without a word he shouldered his gun and went to his post of duty. Not long afterwards, the Lieutenant, going his rounds, discovered by the firelight the bugle upon Gazlay’s cap. He rather authoritatively inquired where he got that bugle. The Colonel said he “must have picked up an officer’s cap somewhere,” and the Lieutenant passed on.

The Colonel stood his turn all night long, and was found in the morning walking his post. Having laid off his overcoat, his shoulder-straps appeared very conspicuously in connection with the musket on his shoulder. As soon as the Lieutenant discovered a Colonel on guard, he approached him, and courteously inquired how he came to be there upon guard? “Well, sir, you placed me here.” With no little agitation the Lieutenant inquired who he was. “My name is Carter Gazley, and I am Lieutenant-Colonel of the Thirty-seventh Indiana regiment.” The Colonel was speedily “released,” but the Lieutenant was not yet relieved from his embarrassment.

3. Aribert Gazlay, Jr.3 (Carter,2 Elizabeth1), born 26 July 1854 in Patriot, Switzerland County, Indiana;1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 died 10 May 1928 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.1 Aribert married, 22 February 1875, Lydia L. Cox7 (born 14 November 1855 in Cheviot, Hamilton County, Ohio, the daughter of Oliver Hazard Cox and Elizabeth Higbee;4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Lydia died 15 November 1943 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio8). Aribert and Lydia are buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.1, 8

Aribert Gazley, Jr., was a clerk on the river boats between Cincinnati, and Memphis and New Orleans for about nine years and was in the transportation business for thirteen years. He is a clerk in the general freight department of the C. H. & D. R. R., Cincinnati, Ohio. He is a bright, active and intelligent gentleman.7

5. Elizabeth Blanch ‘Lizzie’ Gazlay3 (Carter,2 Elizabeth1), born 17 January 1859 in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn County, Indiana;2, 3, 4, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 died 1926.10 Lizzie married, 26 December 1887 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, Charles Henry Apt7, 18 (born 15 July 1860 in Basil, Fairfield County, Ohio, the son of Frederick W. Apt and Eliza Lytton;11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 Charles died 14 March 1929 in Houston, Harris County, Texas16, 17). Lizzie and Charles are buried in Highland Cemetery, Iola, Allen County, Kansas.10, 16

Charles’ biography, excerpted here, appears in A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans, by William Elsey Connelley:18

Charles H. Apt first came to Kansas in the weeks following the first election of Grover Cleveland for the presidency. He had already been thoroughly trained and for a time had practiced law in Ohio, and deciding upon a location in Kansas, he transferred his professional interests to this state and for more than thirty years has been a successful lawyer, has acquired a large amount of farming interests, and is one of the best known citizens of Iola. He is now head of the law firm of Apt & Apt, having a son in partnership with him.

The Apt family originated in Switzerland. Mr. Apt’s grandfather, Henry Apt, was born in Pennsylvania, probably of Swiss parentage, following the business of carder and wool worker, and died at Basil in Fairfield County, Ohio.

While his parents were living in Fairfield County, Ohio, Charles H. Apt was born July 15, 1860. He has little recollection of his father, as he was only five years of age at the time of the soldier’s death. He began his education in the schools of Kewanna, Indiana, but in 1867 his mother returned to Fairfield County, Ohio, and partly by his own efforts and partly by such means as the family could afford he acquired a liberal education. He attended public school in Ohio, and in 1880 graduated from the Ohio Northern University at Ada, with a degree A. B. He also spent one year in the Ohio State University, taking a course in civil engineering. Mr. Apt had his law course in the Cincinnati Law School, where he was graduated LL. B. in 1884. Admitted to the bar in that year, he began practice at Columbus, Ohio, on July 1, and continued a member of the bar of that city until after the election in November.

On coming to Kansas he visited Topeka, Wichita and Wellington, and in January, 1885, located his professional headquarters at Pratt. From March 1885, until June 1, 1904, he was successfully engaged in practice at Pratt, and since the latter date has lived in Iola. He still looks after his extensive clientage in the civil and criminal branches of the law, his offices being at 7 1/2 West Madison Avenue.

Mr. Apt has been prospered in a business way and owns some of the best farming land of Pratt County, divided into three different tracts, consisting respectively of 160, 320 and 640 acres, altogether 1,120 acres. He also owns his residence at 222 South Oak Street in Ohio in Iola, and is on the board of directors of the State Savings Bank of Iola.

Mr. Apt is a democrat. He belongs to the Presbyterian Church, and while at Pratt he assisted in organizing Kilwinning Lodge No. 265, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and still has his membership there. He belongs to Wichita Consistory No. 2, of the Scottish Rite, to Iola Lodge, No.43, Knights of Pythias, of which he is a past Chancellor commander, and has filled all the chairs several times. Other fraternal relations are with Ninnestah Camp, No. 1275, Modern Woodmen of America, at Pratt; with Iola Camp. No.101, Woodmen of the World; and with the Kansas Fraternal Citizens. Mr. Apt is a member of the Kansa State Bar Association.

On December 26, 1887, at Cincinnati, Ohio, he married Miss Blanche Gazlay, daughter of Carter and Lizzie (Emerson) Gazlay. Both her parents are now deceased, and her father for many years practiced law at Cincinnati, Ohio, and in Indiana. Mr. and Mrs. Apt are the parents of two children: Frederick G. and Elizabeth.

Born under the British flag, Allison Bishopric, now a resident of Cincinnati, possessed the courage to seek his fortune in a foreign land and met with a hearty welcome when he settled in this city ten years ago. He is today at the head of one of the flourishing business enterprises of the city and can claim many friends, who recognize his sterling qualities. He was born at Toronto, Canada, September 1, 1871, his parents being John and Ellen (Sinclair) Bishopric. He received his early education in the public schools of Toronto and there laid a foundation by intelligent effort which has materially assisted in his advancement in life. After leaving school he became connected with the shoe business in his native city and continued in that line for five years. Believing that a wider field was presented in the United States, he bade farewell to his early associations and in 1901 came to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he assisted in organizing the British American Company, which was incorporated in 1901 to deal in naval stores and to manufacture brewers’ pitch and sealing wax. Mr. Bishopric has ever since the organization of the company been president and treasurer, and A. Gazlay has filled the office of vice president, and as the company is managed by men of experience and broad ability it has from the start been a marked success. The factory of the company is at Spring Grove avenue and Winton place and fifteen persons here find employment. The products are shipped to all parts of the United States and Canada. Mr. Bishopric is also actively connected with other enterprises, among which may be named the Mastic Wall Board & Roofing Company, which was incorporated at New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1909. This company manufacturer a substitute for wall plaster and composition roofing. A building is being erected for the use of the company and the success of the business is now assured. The officers are: William Bancroft, of New Orleans, president; Allison Bishopric, vice president; and E. J. Ross, of New Orleans, secretary. William R. Park, a well known business man of Cincinnati, is a member of the board of directors. Judging by the favor with which the product offered by this company is being accepted, there is every reason to believe that its operation will at an early day extend to all the principal points in the country.

In Cincinnati, Mr. Bishopric was married to Miss Adelle Fern Gazlay, a daughter of Aribert Gazlay. Three children have been born to this union, Emerson, Allison, Jr., and Charlotte. Mr. Bishopric was reared in the Episcopal church and is a vestryman of Grace Episcopal church of Avondale. He is a stanch believer in the Bible and in his business as well as in private life aims to exemplify the teaching of the Great Book. The possessor of original ideas, which he has incorporated in his business, he has gained more than the ordinary measure of success and his industry and persistent application give promise of still greater victories. He occupies a prominent and honored position in business and social circles and is rightly classed among the representative and prosperous men of Cincinnati.

Frederick G. Apt was born at Pratt, Kansas, July 2, 1889, was educated in the public schools at Iola, where he attended high school, and in 1910 finished the law course in the University of Kansas, attaining the degree of LL. B. While in university he became affiliated with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Greek letter fraternity. Admitted to the bar in 1910, he returned to Iola and has carried on a general practice as junior member of the firm of Apt & Apt. He also owns a good farm of eighty acres in Neosho County. Frederick G. Apt is a republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, of Iola Lodge No. 38, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and is a director in the State Savings Bank of Iola. He is unmarried.26
