15From The Champion Genealogy: “H. Champion Gazlay, M.D., began his study of medicine in 1838, and two years later entered upon his practice. During the winters of 1949 and 1850 he attended the Central Medical College in Syracuse, N.Y., from which he was graduated in March 1850. In 1863 he entered the Eclectic College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa., and he was graduated on March 16, 1864. Dr. Gazlay has been coroner of Cortland County for four terms, and for four years has held the appointment of examining surgeon under the Pension Act of 1862. He resides in Cortland, N.Y.”7
Dr. Gazlay’s fourth marriage was announced in the Cortland Evening Standard:25
That stalwart Republican, Dr. Henry Champion Gazlay, anticipating the election of McKinley and the coming of a season of prosperity took steps Monday toward increasing his domestic happiness along with his patriotic rejoicing and was married at 3 o’clock that afternoon at the home of the bride at McGrawville to Mrs. Martha Eliza White. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. J. Cowles. Many friends will tender congratulations.
Dr. Gazlay’s obituary provides additional details of his life:26
The remains of Dr. Henry C. Gazlay, who died Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. H. Hollenbeck, in Creston, Ia., are expected to arrive in Cortland Thursday morning and the funeral will be held at the home of his son, Mr. H. W. Gazlay, 138 Groton-ave., Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock.
Henry C. Gazlay was born in South Edmeston, Otsego Co., eighty-two years ago. In 1864 he came to Cortland from Homer, where he had lived for a number of years and took up the practice of the late Dr. H. A. Bolles, who at that time gave up his active practice to devote his time to lecturing. Dr. Gazlay was four times married and three children by his first wife, who was Sabra E. Cornwall of Truxton, survive him. These are Miss Achsa M. Gazlay of Cortland; Mrs. Mary C. Gazlay Hollenbeck of Creston, Ia., and Mr. H. W. Gazlay of Cortland.
The doctor’s health has been failing for some time and in November, 1899 he went to Creston, Ia., to the home of his daughter, where he remained till the time of his death.
Another obituary, in the Brookfield Courier, quoting the Creston (Ia.) Gazette, provides more details:27
Died, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. H. Hollenbeck, in Lake View, March 19, of apoplexy, Dr. H. C. Gazley, aged 81 years and 7 months. Short funeral services were held at the home Tuesday evening, Dr. D. P. Breed officiating, and Mr. Hollenbeck left on No. 2 Tuesday night with the remains, for Cortland, N. Y., where interment will take place. Dr. Gazley was a retired physician. For many years he practiced medicine at Cortland. He came to Creston last November to make his home with the family of his daughter. Thursday afternoon Dr. Gazley was stricken with apoplexy, and being unconscious until death. Dr. Gazley was a prominent citizen of Cortland. He was a Mason and a member of the Congregational church. Since coming to Creston Dr. Gazley has made a number of warm friends. He was a gentleman of excellent character and very fine attainments. He has a brother, Miles M. Gazley of South Edmeston, N. Y. -Creston (Ia.) Gazette, March 22.
The Cortland Democrat provides a brief obituary:28
Tuesday, Mrs. Henry C. Gazley, who for some time past has been a great though patient sufferer from a combination of dropsical and tumorous affections, died at her home 54 Clinton avenue from which the funeral services will be at 10 A.M. Friday.

She was one of the organizers and was president till her death of the Cortland County Home Department union of the Sunday-school, and was the superintendent of the Home department of her own church from its beginning till the day of her death. 41Miles’ obituary provides an interesting sketch of his life:46
Miles M. Gazlay, a life-long resident of South Edmeston, N.Y., died November 3, 1900, aged 76 years. His father, Jacob Gazlay, was one of the pioneer settlers of Unadilla Valley, living for many years upon the very farm where Miles M. Gazlay was born and died. There are but few in this busy world of change and unrest, that live for seventy-six long years, in one locality, and especially in the home of birth. June 21st, 1863, Mr. Gazlay was married to Catharine Yaw who died, leaving one daughter, now Mrs. Homer Stickney of South Dakota. Later on Mr. Gazlay married Mrs. Julia Carpenter who now mourns the loss of a faithful husband. A daughter, Mrs. Andrew Walling, and one son, Charles Gazlay, also survive him, the latter living upon the old homestead. Mr. Gazlay was honored and respected by all who knew him. Living as he did so long in one vicinity, he was known by everyone for miles around. He was an honest man in the best and highest sense of the word. No one can truthfully say that he was ever wronged out of a cent by Miles M. Gazlay. Upon the other hand Mr. G. was always more than just—ready and willing to help others in affliction. As a neighbor he was kind and obliging—ever willing to grant favors to all. His home was always open to his friends and relatives. He faithfully cared for his parents as long as they lived, and also an invalid sister. Other relatives also had a home with him whenever they wished. We are glad to know that he too was tenderly cared for as old age came on. Kind hands ministered to his needs, just as he had done to others. Mr. Gazlay will be missed everywhere. His cheerful face and hopeful words that always characterized him, will live only in memory. But memory will be true, and it will often bring back the fond remembrances of a manly man, and a friend to humanity. While the departed one sleeps so near to the only home he ever knew, and among the graves of his ancesters [sic], pleasant memories will linger in the souls of those who knew him. May there be a glad reunion in the “other life.” M. A. H.

16, 9, 10Mary’s obituary provides an interesting summary of her life:10
Mother of Miss A. M. Gazlay of Homer Has Passed Away
Mrs. Mary Celestia Gazlay Hollenbeck, wife of A. H. Hollenbeck who died at her home in Creston, Ia., on Tuesday, Jan. 14, and who was a former resident of Cortland county, was born in Fabius, N. Y., Jan. 19, 1846, and was the daughter of Henry Champion Gazlay and Sabra E. Cornwall. The family later moved to Truxton and afterwards to Homer, N. Y. Here she was graduated from the Cortland academy. Later still she moved with the family to Cortland, N. Y., and on Dec. 31, 1873, she was married to A. H. Hollenbeck of Belvidere, Ill.
After graduating at Homer and before her marriage, Mrs. Hollenbeck taught for two years. She was a proficient French scholar, a lover of all literature and kept in touch with the progress of the world.
Mr. and Mrs. Hollenbeck resided at Belvidere until 1892 when they moved to Creston, Ia., which has since been their home. Her illness began two years ago and from the first has tested the skill of the best physicians, and the tender care of her family was availing and on Tuesday morning, Jan. 14, 1919, her freed spirit passed into the “beautiful beyond.”
The funeral services were held at her home Thursday afternoon, Jan. 16, Rev. C. C. Harris of the Congregational church officiating. There was no formal discourse, but comforting passages of Scripture were read, followed by earnest remarks and a sincere prayer. Tenderly they carried out the casket covered with the flowers she had always loved so much and now she sleeps in the painless, aimless sleep that knows no waking in a quiet spot in Graceland. The bearers were Messrs. Scott Armstrong, James Gautt, H. L. Royce, J. M. Miller, J. W. Stratton and George Ide. Mrs. Hollenbeck is survived by her husband, one daughter Mrs. W. P. Tracy of St. Joseph, Mo., one sister, Miss Achsa M. Gazlay of Homer, one brother, W. H. Gazlay of Dayton, Texas, and one grandson, Walter C. Tracy. One son, a promising young man of 21 years preceded the mother’s death sixteen years ago. Neither the brother nor the sister were able to be present at the funeral, but the son-in-law, W. A. Tracey, and the grandson, W. C. Tracey, were there in St. Joseph.
Mrs. Hollenbeck was a woman of rare culture and beautiful character. She became a Christian early in life and when she removed to Creston she aligned with the Congregational church and was a constant and faithful attendant until her fatal illness began.

37Leo and his wife Maude moved to Montclair, New Jersey, in 1918, where Leo was employed as personal chauffeur for Edwin Merton McBrier in Montclair. Leo was a long time member of South Presbyterian Church of Montclair, and later Grace Presbyterian Church.37
Maude was born in the Bevier house, Marbletown, Stone Ridge (now the Historical Society) while her father William worked that farm. In 1901, her parents William and Effie lived at the Shallbark farm (as it is now known) across from the Dutch Reformed Church in Accord. Maude saw the first train in the valley go down the valley from that farm, only a few years after the canal closed in 1898, and she saw the last train go down the tracks from the Brick House, Kerhonkson, where she later lived. William was living in the house in Accord when Maude got married in 1915 (she was married in the Methodist Church, Accord). He built a house in Maybrook, N.Y. (near Goshen and Middletown) while he worked on the railroad as a carpenter. William and Effie also lived in the house now occupied by Dr. Dobushak, across from the Rainbow Diner in Kerhonkson. Maude remembered how she and her cousin Sarah [Sarah Geary Christian] would get in a barrel together and roll down the hill behind this house, their heads knocking together the whole way. Another time, Maude and Sarah were playing in a hay cart and managed to tip it over, for which they were quite afraid of Maude’s brothers who would have to reload the hay wagon. Maude was the executrix of her mother’s estate, and she periodically had to track down her brother John who was an inheritor, as was Stanley Bush (Maude’s nephew through her brother Harry), whom Maude also tracked down (in Panama) when he reached age 21.45
