First Generation
1. Helen E. Fox,1 born 1841 in Cooperstown, Otsego County, New York, the daughter of James Lloyd Fox and Caroline Hubby;1, 2, 3, 4 died 5 February 1917 in New Berlin, Chenango County, New York.4 Helen married, first, _____ Tilton5 (born ____, parents not determined). Helen married, second, 19 June 1877 in South Edmeston, Otsego County, New York, Dr. Erasmus Darwin Hayward4, 5 (born 1814 in Solon, Cortland County, New York, parents not determined;3, 5, 6, 7 Erasmus died 23 February 1891 in New Berlin, Chenango County, New York5, 8). Helen is buried in Columbus Corners Cemetery, Columbus, Chenango County, New York.9 Erasmus is buried in Columbus Corners Cemetery, Columbus, Chenango County, New York.8

Helen lived in New Berlin, New York, for many years, and after the death of her husband, Dr. Erasmus D. Hayward, she moved to Utica, New York. Harriet founded the Col. Israel Angel Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) in New Berlin, and she was its first regent. She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in New Berlin, and later she attended the Trinity and Calvary churches in Utica.4

Dr. Hayward started the practice of medicine 13 January 1838 in Columbus, New York, and he relinquished his practice in the fall of 1883. He was Supervisor of Columbus in 1858, ’59, ’60, and ’64. He served as president of the Chenango County Medical Society for one year, and he was the second oldest member of the society when he died. He was a director of the First National Bank of New Berlin since its organization. He first married Elizabeth M. Hinkley, of Sherburne, in 1835, by which he had two sons, Hiram S. and Charles Hayward. On June 19, 1877, he married Helen E. Tilton, the daughter of the late Dr. James L. Fox.5
