Adaline and William are buried in Wauseon Union Cemetery, Wauseon, Fulton County, Ohio.10, 5

A 1905 history of the County of Fulton, Ohio, provides interesting details of William H. Fields, his family, and his wife’s family.

WILLIAM H. FIELDS, a builder and house-mover of Wauseon, was born in Enniskillen, Ontario, Canada. He is the son of William and Mary Ann Sophrona (Shoaff) Fields, both natives of Canada. William Fields came to Wauseon in 1865, where he engaged in building and house-moving, in which business he was quite successful. For some years he was actively engaged in the furniture and undertaking business. During the thirty-eight years, that he conducted his business so successfully in Wauseon, he found some time to devote to society and social affairs. In Odd Fellowship he took a very active part, having passed all the chairs of that organization, and was quite prominent all over the State. He was equally active in the temperance cause, being identified with all the temperance societies. It is therefore not to be wondered at that he enjoyed the respect of all classes. He died in 1902 at the age of seventy-five years and is survived by his widow, who is still in remarkably good health, notwithstanding she is seventy-six years old. There were born to this marriage the following children: Almira (deceased), who was the wife of Miles Root of Clinton township; Sarah E., wife of Jason Dowell of Toledo, O.; Sophrona (deceased), who was the wife of James Murphy of Wauseon; William H., the subject of this sketch; Madison, of Michigan; Cyrus, of Chicago; Anna M. (deceased), who was the wife of David M. Mikesell of Toledo; Cora B., wife of John Maxwell of Michigan; and Charles, of Wauseon. William H. Fields, the subject of this sketch was nine years old when he came to Wauseon with his parents. He was educated in the public schools of his home city. After leaving school he formed a partnership with his father in the contracting and house-moving business, in which he is still actively engaged. His success is largely due to the fact that he is thoroughly equipped for his work, understanding it in every detail. So carefully are buildings moved under his direction that comparatively little damage is done to them. As a matter of course he enjoys a very liberal patronage. He married Miss Adaline A. Dunbar, daughter of James Dunbar, born in New London, Conn., in 1817, who located in Erie county, in 1831, and two years later in Clinton township, Fulton county, where he entered wild land. The maiden name of Mrs. Fields’ mother was Gleason. The children of Mr. and Mrs. James Dunbar are: William Wallace (deceased), who served in the Civil war; Gurden R. B., who was killed in the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia; Martha E., now the wife of Henry B. Scott, of Seattle, Washington; Mary (deceased); Adaline A., wife of William H. Fields; Orin R. (deceased); Anna M., wife of Madison Fields, and William Sherman of Wauseon. The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Fields has been blessed with one child, Arthur J.

Julia and Charles are buried in Jordan Cemetery, Waterford, New London County, Connecticut.64, 73

Charles A. Perkins, of Lebanon, was born at Bozrah October 25, 1863, and is the son of Samuel and Philura (Miner) Perkins. He received his education in the public schools. On September 10, 1884, he married Julia Sisson daughter of Albert and Amelia (Dunbar) Sisson and they have had two children: Frank C., born November 22, 1888 and Fannie C., born February 12, 1891. Mr. Perkins is a successful farmer and is also engaged in carpentry. He is a Republican and has been Tax Collector four years. He is also Trustee of the First Congregational Church at Lebanon and has been superintendent of the Sunday School several years. Mr. Perkins is Ex-Councillor of William Williams Council, O. U. A. M., No. 72; a member of the A. O. U. W., and Fraternal Helpers. His upright and genial qualities gained for him many true friends at the Capitol.75

Another longer biography provides more extensive details of Charles and his family:77

Charles A. Perkins was born Oct. 25, 1863, in Bozrah, Conn., and attended the district school and Bacon academy until he was about fifteen years of age. At that time he lost his father, and was obliged to remain at home to manage the farm, as the older boys had all branched out for themselves. Although still a boy he was capable of doing as much work as any man. For four years he worked very hard upon the farm, and then his mother disposed of the property, and the young man began working for the Yantic Paper Company as fireman, and later for several years he was an engineer, remaining in the employ of that company for almost nine years, or until 1885. At that time, on account of poor health, he gave up his position. He had been allowed to work over time for extra pay, and some weeks he managed to do ten and one-half days’ work, beginning his tasks long before daylight. His strength, however, was not equal to the strain he put upon it, and he was forced to try outdoor labor. Renting a farm in Lebanon, he resided there for a year, and then removed to another farm, which he made his home for four years, at the end of that time, beginning work at the carpenter’s trade. Being of a mechanical turn, as were his brothers and sisters, it was very easy for him to learn the details of the trade, and he was soon working for Mr. William Taylor. In 1897, with his savings, he purchased his present farm, known as the “Ira Tucker place,” a tract of fifty acres, upon which he has made many improvements, and where he is engaged in farming and dairying, although he still works at his trade of carpenter, hiring a good deal of his farm work.

On Sept. 10, 1884, Mr. Perkins was happily married to Julia A. Sisson, of Groton, daughter of Albert B. and Amelia (Dunbar) Sisson. Amelia Dunbar was a sister of William Dunbar, who was lost on the ill-fated “Genetta” in Arctic waters. Another brother, Gurdon, also a seafaring man, spent three years with a companion on a lonely island, where they were wrecked. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Perkins are: Frank Charles, born Nov. 22, 1888; Fannie Clara, born Feb. 12, 1891. In politics Mr. Perkins is a Republican, and has served on the board of relief, and has been repeatedly chosen constable, but has never qualified. In 1900 he was elected tax collector. Fraternally he was a prominent and active member of William Williams Council No. 72, Order United American Mechanics, passing all the chairs, and in 1898 he was chosen to represent the organization at the state council held at Milford. Both he and his estimable wife are consistent members of the Congregational Church, and he is now assistant superintendent of the Sunday School. Mr. Perkins is a self-made man, and by his industry, energy and ability has risen in the world and firmly established himself in the respect and confidence of all who know him.

Beach (born ca. 1899 in Connecticut, parents not determined;85 Grace died 20 April 1975 in New Milford, Litchfield County, Connecticut86). Russell was adopted by Herbert Getchell and Amelia M. ‘Amy’ Sisson.

An article in the Norwich Bulletin indicates that Russell was adopted by Herbert Getchell and his wife, and that Russell was apparently abused.87

LEFT HOME, BOY CLAIMS, BECAUSE HE WAS BEATEN

“I stole it because I wanted to be arrested and be put somewhere so they can’t touch me.” This statement was made Saturday morning in the Groton town court by Russell H. Getchell, 14, adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Getchell of Thames View, whose disappearance from home was reported Friday. Russell was arrested in Mystic on a charge of stealing from a store a clock valued at $3.75. The lad ran away from home Thursday, coming from the Quaker Hill school in New London, and, according to his testimony in court, walking to Mystic.

Peter Hammacker, proprietor of the store where the theft took place, had the boy arrested, and upon his presentation in court he was asked why he did the act. His reply was followed by testimony to the effect that his adopted parents had abused him severely, and that he could not stand it any longer. His parents denied this, but neighbors volunteered the information, following the hearing, that the boy had been abused, and had often showed cuts on his hands.

The court decided that probation officer Richard W. Mansfield was the best person to untangle the situation, and Russell was placed in his care for six months. Mr. Mansfield heard the stories of the boy and his foster parents and will send the boy to the Boy’s school in Cheshire.
