Biography

John was three years old when his father died. He was raised by his Uncle Henry and Aunt Emma in their house on Main Street, Angola, New York. John was a merchant druggist in a grocery store with Thaddeus Hurd in Clyde, Ohio. John had a grocery store on Main Street in Bellevue, Ohio.7

John served in several units during the Civil War. He enlisted on 14 February 1862 and was mustered in as a private, 77th N.Y. Infantry, Company G., on 7 March 1862. Apparently he was too young so initially he served as a drummer boy. He was captured in action on 3 May 1863 at Fredricksburg, Virginia, and paroled on 15 May 1863 at City Point, Virginia. He was discharged on 1 June 1863. John reenlisted in Buffalo, New York, and was mustered in as first sergeant, Company G, 1st N.Y. Veterans Cavalry, 10 October 1863. He was transferred from the 14th Heavy Artillery and mustered in to Company L as second lieutenant, receiving his commission on 31 January 1865. On 3 June 1865 he was transferred to Company B, and he was mustered out with his company on 20 July 1865 at Camp Piatt, West Virginia. Among the battles he participated in were the Peninsular Campaign, Franklin Division, Army of the Potomac; Battle of Fredricksburg, and New Market, West Virginia, and the Battle of Piedmont in Winchester, Virginia.1, 7, 10, 11
