  1. U.S. Federal Census, 1860, New York, Erie County, Evans, Page 31, family of John Gazley (40, NY, physician), Phebe Gazley (35, NY), Jane A. Gazley (8, NY), Mary E. Gazley (5, NY).
  2. New York State Census, 1865, Erie County, Evans, Page 17, family of John Gazley (45, Schoharie County, farmer), wife Phebe Gazley (41, Schoharie County, 4 children), child Jane Anjanlie (this middle name is uncertain; hard to read) Gazley (13, Erie County), child May Gazlay (11, Erie County). The number of children for Phebe would suggest that two died young.
  3. U.S. Federal Census, 1870, New York, Erie County, West Seneca, Page 81, family (indexed as Garlay) of John Gazlay (50, NY, Doctor of Med), Phebe Gazlay (45, NY), Jeanne A. Gazlay (18, NY), Mary A. Gazlay (16, NY), and Clorenten Heaten (76, NY).
  4. New York State Census, 1875, Erie County, West Seneca, Page 28, family of John Gazley (55, New York, physician); wife Phibi Gazley (50, [unreadable]); daughter Jane A. Gazley (23, Erie Co.); daughter Mary A. Gazley (20, Erie Co.); mother in law Cleranden Haith (87, New York, widow).
  5. U.S. Federal Census, 1880, New York, Erie County, Gardenville, Enumeration District 108, Page Nos. 18 and 19, family of John Gazlay (60, NY, Doctor), wife Phebe (56, NY), daughter Mary (22, NY), daughter Jennie Lovejoy (26, NY, married), and mother-in-law Clorinda Hayd [sic, Haight] (87, NY, listed as maimed, crippled, bedridden, or otherwise disabled).
  6. Gazlay Family Notes, undated and unpublished. This photocopy of five pages of hand-written notes start with what is believed to be the same 1852 interview of Sayrs Gazlay by his brother Theodore that is transcribed elsewhere. The remaining pages focus on the branch of the family that includes John Arvin Gazlay (1846-1911). Some dates in this photocopy differ from other sources. Transcription available at Gazlay Family History (website).
  7. Find a Grave (website). North Collins Quaker Meeting House Cemetery, North Collins, Erie County, New York. Jennie A. Gazlay Lovejoy, b. Dec. 16, 1851; d. Mar. 2, 1883 [from record, which includes a note indicating she is the daughter of John & Phebe Gazley & the wife of Walter Robinson]. Her gravestone is inscribed as Jennie Wife of Walter R. Lovejoy and Daughter of John & Phebe Gazlay with dates as above. It is thought that Walter Lovejoy’s middle name was Robinson, as opposed to Jennie marrying two different Walters.
