Sophia Jacquillard,1 born 20 June 1828 in Alsace-Lorraine, France (parents not determined);1, 2, 3, 4, 5 died 27 October 1905.1 Sophia married, 16 March 1847, William Hauch1 (born 6 January 1823 in Germany, parents not determined;1, 2, 3, 4, 5 William died 16 April 19061). Sophia and William are buried in Fairmount Cemetery, Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.6

Sophia immigrated to the United States in 1842.5 Sophia was from a family of brewers before immigrating to the U.S. Members of her family later worked at the Hensler Brewery, Newark, New Jersey.7

William immigrated to the United States in 1844.5

The Hauch family was in the brewery business in Germany, some of whom worked in the Hensler Brewery, Newark, New Jersey after the Hauch family immigrated to the U.S.7

11. Ida May Hauch2 (Sophia1), born February 1869 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey;2, 3, 8, 9 died 28 April 1955.1 Ida married, ca. 1897, John Philp Patterson8, 9, 15 (born 18 July 1873 in Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland, the son of George Patterson and Euphemia Philp;10, 11, 12, 13 John died 29 November 1914 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey14). Ida and John are buried in Fairmount Cemetery, Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.16

Ida worked for 22 years at the Barkley Corset Co., sewing hand-made corsets.17

John worked at the Erie Boiler Compound as a salesman. The 1900 US Census lists his occupation as bookkeeper. His grave at Fairmount Cemetery is unmarked.17

  15. Ida (Hauch) Patterson is shown with her parents in the 1900 US Census. Her entry shows that she has been married for 3 years and has had 1 child, still living. However, neither her husband (John Patterson) nor the child are shown here. The identity of the supposed child is unknown. The 1910 US Census shows Ida with her husband John and two children, that they have been married for 13 years (consistent with the 1900 census) and that it is the first marriage for each of them. In a separate entry in the 1900 US Census, John Patterson is shown with his parents, and that record shows that John is single. It is believed that this entry for John Patterson is in error.

23. John Philp ‘Johnnie’ Patterson3 (Ida,2 Sophia1), born 26 January 1903 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey;11, 12 died 8 December 1978 in Lake Worth, Florida.11 Johnnie married, 25 June 1933 in Presbyterian Memorial Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Irene Helena Johnston13 (born 28 January 1907 in Corrine, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of William George Johnston and Mary Matilda Eagleson;13, 14 Irene died 31 July 2005 in Lake Worth, Florida14).

As a teenager, Johnnie attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Newark Technical College, and he also completed several international correspondence courses. He was the assistant sales manager for National Oil and Supply Co. In 1954 he moved to Florida and opened a paint store as an agent for John Lucas Paint Co., along with his brother-in-law, Karl Steffen. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, reading, sports, traveling and music, and he was a Mason.13

Irene and her brother Edward Johnston (husband of Ida V. Patterson) were from a large family in Canada. Their parents owned wheat farms in the Milestone, Saskatchewan, area. As a child, Irene was active in church groups and Canadian Girls in Training, similar to the Girl Scouts in the United States. She graduated from Milestone High School in 1926, and she immigrated to the United States on 31 October 1927. Irene attended Drakes Secretarial School in New Jersey, and before her marriage to Johnnie she worked for Penn State College. For 22 years, she worked as a stenographer and clerical worker for Disbrow Manufacturing Co., Newark (and later East Orange), New Jersey. Irene enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading and sports, and she did volunteer work for the American Lung Association. She lived in Lake Worth, Florida near her two sisters-in-law, Ida V. (Patterson) Johnston and Effie (Patterson) Steffen.13


24. Ida Valentine Patterson3 (Ida,2 Sophia1), born 14 February 1907 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey;12, 13 died 27 October 2010 in Lake Worth, Florida.15 Ida married, 24 December 1955 in First Baptist Church, West Palm Beach, Florida, Edward Elden ‘Eddie’ Johnston13 (born 14 May 1906, the son of William George Johnston and Mary Matilda Eagleson;16 Eddie died 3 June 1987 in Lake Worth, Florida16).

Ida was a Girl Scout and was active in church groups as a child. She attended Robert Tread Junior High School through the 10th grade, and she attended Coleman Business College, Newark, New Jersey for two years. For 38 years until her retirement in 1967, Ida was the office manager and executive secretary for Disbrow Manufacturing Co., Newark, New Jersey (and later East Orange), a manufacturer of folding cartons, cards, and packing materials. Mr. Disbrow was a salesman in a similar firm when he started his own company along with his brother and Ida. Ida enjoyed ice skating, knitting, sewing, reading, crafts and traveling. She and Eddie moved to Lake Worth, Florida, in 1967.13

Eddie played hockey and baseball in Canada, and he belonged to the Elks in Canada before immigrating to the United States in 1932. He was a staff sergeant, ordinance division, in the U.S. Army in World War II, enlisting at age 36. While serving in England, Eddie worked in truck maintenance. He worked for the Red Cross instead of going with his unit to the East after the European war ended. Eddie was a foreman in the chemical department of National Oil and Supply Co. for 25 years. He liked reading, sports and fishing, and he golfed now and then.13


25. Effie Philp Patterson3 (Ida,2 Sophia1), born 12 June 1910 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey;17 died 18 January 2003 in Lake Worth, Florida.17 Effie married, 14 February 1940 in Evangelical Baptist Church, Newark, New Jersey, Karl Steffen13 (born 29 January 1904 in Hamburg, Germany, the son of Martin Karl Steffen and Johanna D. _____;18 Karl died 21 January 1981 in Lake Worth, Florida13, 18).

Effie attended Robert Trent Junior High School, and she also took comptroller courses in business school. During her working life, Effie was the head of the billing department for Sherwin Williams Paint Co. She and Karl spent 25 years traveling and living in Central and South America and also traveling in Europe, Canada and the U.S. She enjoyed knitting, reading, sports, dancing, sewing and traveling. Effie and Karl lived in Lake Worth, Florida after returning from South America.13

Karl immigrated to the U.S. on 31 October 1927. Karl worked for many years as a foreign representative to Sherwin Williams Co., a paint manufacturer, in Panama, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. He was also a sales manager for Schenly Liquor International. He eventually made himself an independent salesman, handling construction materials, paints, electrical and plumbing supplies in Central America, Venezuela, and Columbia. In 1954 he opened a paint store as agent for John Lucas Paint Co., along with his brother-in-law, John Patterson. In 1959, Karl and Effie went to Panama to help a friend while they went to Europe, and they stayed there until 1964. Karl enjoyed golf and fishing, and he was an avid sports fan. He also invested in the stock market.13
