OBITUARY.

Hon. JONAS C. HEARTT.

Hon. Jonas C. Heartt, an old and highly respected citizen of Troy, N.Y., died of general debility, in this City, Thursday at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Edward Schell, No. 53 Clinton place, aged eighty-one years. Mr. Heartt was born in Troy, in 1793, and in early life went into the hardware business with his brother, under the firm name of Jonas C. Heartt & Bro. In 1847 he retired with a competency, and the business was continued by his son, Charles F. Heartt, who died on the 4th of March last. Mr. Heartt previous to the year 1836 was several times elected to the Common Council of his native city, and in that year was elected Mayor, which office he held until 1842. In 1854 he was elected to the Assembly, and was chosen Speaker. He was always closely identified with the interests of the City of Troy, and was very energetic in his exertions to forward its steam-boat and railroad enterprises. He was one of the Trustees of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the time of his death, and had occupied the same position for fifty years. He was characterized by amiability and kindliness, and was highly respected by his fellow citizens. Mr. Heartt leaves three children, a son and two daughters. His remains will be taken to Troy to-day, for interment on Monday.

Additional details are provided in a Biographical Record of the Officers and Graduates of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 1824-1886:10

Hon. Jonas Coe Heartt, son of Phillip Heartt, was born in Troy, N.Y., August 12th, 1793. He was a member of the class of 1811 in Union College. His life was closely interwoven with the interest of Troy; he grew up with it, and helped to make it what it is. He was not a seeker of public positions, but was sought for as one peculiarly fitted to represent the city both at home and in the Legislature, where he was made speaker by a flattering vote. His connection with city affairs began in 1822, when he was elected assistant alderman for the second ward. He was also a supervisor of this ward for 1833, 1835, and 1836, and in 1838 he was elected mayor, and re-elected each following year until 1843, when he declined the nomination.

It was through the united efforts of Mr. Heartt and Jonathan Edwards that Troy was made the terminus instead of a branch of the Hudson River Railroad. Mr. Heart was instrumental in having a direct line of steamboats from Troy to New York, and for twelve years was a director in the River Steamboat Association. He was a director of the Troy & Boston Railroad from the time of its construction until his decease. He was the first president of the board of trustees of the fire department, and for many years was a member of the board of fire commissioners. After the death of Mr. Marshall, Mr. Heartt was made president of the board of governors of the Marshall Infirmary, and through his efforts a debt of eighteen thousand dollars against the institution was paid off in one year. Upon the formation of the Mutual Bank he was a director, which office he held, in connection with presidency of the Mutual Savings Bank, until his death. He was interested in the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, of which for years he was a trustee, and also of the Troy Female Seminary, of which he long was the honored president. With all these interests so beneficial to the city, he was for more than forty years was actively engaged in the hardware business, which was founded by his father in 1798. Mr. Heartt was chosen a member of the vestry of St. Paul’s Church on Easter Monday, 1831, and constantly until 1861, when he was chosen church warden. He was a member of that church for nearly fifty years, and aided it with wise counsel, active exertion and liberal contributions. He was a good friend, remarkably strong in his attachments and strictly honorable in all his business relations.

He was married August 30th, 1814, to Catherine Lamberson. Nine children. He died April 30th, 1874, aged 81 years. Trustee of the Institute, ex officio — being mayor of Troy — from 1842 to 1843, and was elected trustee in 1864, holding the position until the time of his death.

A third biography gives more details to his life:12

JONAS C. HEARTT, son of Philip Heartt, was born in Troy, Aug. 12, 1793, and at the time of his death, April 30, 1874, was the oldest native-born inhabitant of the city. He was the first child baptized by the first pastor of the Troy First Presbyterian church, and for this reason he was given the name of the pastor, Jonas Coe. His life was closely interwoven with the interests of Troy; he grew up with it, and helped to make it what it is. To his intelligent counsel can be attributed many of the successful enterprises, both moral and educational, that are now the pride of the city. He was not a seeker of public position, but he was sought for as on peculiarly fitted to represent the city, both at home and in the Legislature, where he was made Speaker by a flattering vote. His connection with city affairs began in 1822, when he was elected assistant alderman for the Second Ward. He was also supervisor of this ward for 1833, ’35, and ’36, and in 1838 he was elected mayor and re-elected each following year until 1843, when he declined the nomination. During these years many advantages were gained to Troy which were due to his prudence and quick-sightedness. He saw the necessity of opening direct communication with the West, and during his mayoralty measures were adopted for building the Troy and Schenectady Railroad. It was through the united efforts of Mr. Heartt and Jonathan Edwards that Troy was made the terminus instead of a branch of the Hudson River Railroad. Mr. Heartt was instrumental in having a direct line of steamboats from Troy to New York, and for twelve years was a director in the River Steamboat Association. He was a director of the Troy and Boston Railroad from the time of its construction until his decease. He was the first president of the board of trustees of the fire department, and for many years was a member of the board of fire commissioners. After the death of Mr. Marshall, Mr. Heartt, was made president of the board of governors of the Marshall Infirmary, and through his efforts a debt of eighteen thousand dollars against the institution was paid off in one year. Upon the formation of the Mutual Bank he was made a director, which office he held in connection with the presidency of the Mutual Savings Bank until the time of his decease. He was always ready to afford assistance to educational interests. He was interested in the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, of which for years he was a trustee, and also of the Troy Female Seminary, of which he long was the honored president.

With all these interests, so beneficial to the city, he for more than forty years was actively engaged in the hardware business, which was founded by his father in 1798. Mr. Heartt was chosen a member of the vestry of St. Paul’s Church on Easter Monday, 1831, and constantly until 1861, when he was chosen church-warden, as successor to Hon. David Buel, Jr.; and he was a member of that church for nearly fifty years, and aided it with wise counsel, active exertion, and liberal contributions. He was a good friend, remarkably strong in his attachments, and strictly honorable in his business relations. He was genial and entertaining, and rarely can a man be found so free from deceit. At the time of his death meetings were held, resolutions passed, and fitting addresses made by the members of the following institutions, in honor of him whom all had learned to respect as a good man: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; the directors of the Mutual National Bank; the Troy Club, of which he was president; board of trustees of Troy Female Seminary; Troy and Boston Railroad; Governors of Marshall Infirmary; Troy Gas-Light Company. Mr. Heartt was married Aug. 30, 1814, to Catherine Lamberson, a lady of rare womanly qualities, and who was born at Jamaica, L. I., Aug. 8, 1793. Of their nine children only three are living, - Jonas S. Heartt, of Troy, Mrs. Edward Schell, and Mary W. Heartt, of New York City.

Edward’s obituary provides an interesting biography:13

DEATH OF EDWARD SCHELL.

Residents of Rye and Port Chester will be pained to learn of the death of Edward Schell, Esq., which took place at his residence, No. 53 Clinton Place, New York City, on Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock, after a short but severe illness. Mr. Schell had not been in his usual good health for the past four or five weeks, but it was not until Friday that alarming signs showed themselves. He from that date grew rapidly worse, and despite the best medical skill he rapidly succumbed to blood poisoning. After less than three days confinement he passed away painlessly. The cause of dissolution was uremic blood poisoning. The distinguished citizen will be remembered by our people as the public spirited gentleman who for many years has had his country residence on the road to the Steamboat Dock, one of the most charming retreats on the Sound. He was born in Rhinebeck, N.Y., November 7th, 1819 and was therefore 74 years old at the time of his death. His first schooling was in the Starr Institute in his native town, which he left at the age of ten years, to begin active commercial life in the City of New York. His first employ was with Wright & Co., Linen importers of Cedar Street. Even at that tender age he showed those qualities that the self made man needs so essentially, and by that hard earnest work which characterized him throughout, he rose from errand boy, clerk, etc., until step by step he advanced to the important position of Foreign Buyer for the firm, a responsibility in those days which was considered a great one. His apprenticeship in the dry good trade developed independence and energy which required a greater field for the young merchant, and severing his connection with the linen firm he joined fortunes with an associate under the firm name of Louis S. Fellows & Schell, being the junior partner of the jewelry firm which had quarters in the building 21 Maiden Lane. This business was continued profitably for about twenty years, when Mr. Schell entered on the financial career which has eventuated in such grand success, the first step being his election as a Trustee of the Manhattan Savings Institution, succeeding later as the treasure of said institution. In 1876 he was elected Presid’t of the same institution, giving his general attention to it, and virtually controlling its large interests. Mr. Schell, in 1847, married Miss Jane L. Heartt, of Troy, N.Y., daughter of the then Mayor of that City, Jonas C. Heartt, afterwards speaker in the Lower House of the State Legislature. Of this union there were two children: Edward H. Schell and Mary Emily Schell, both of whom are now living. Mrs. Schell died in New York City in 1880. Mr. Schell was a member of the St. Nicholas and Manhattan Club, St. Nicholas Society, the St. Joherland Society, The Down-Town Association; he was also a trustee of St. Luke’s Hospital, the American Institute, Northern Dispensary, a director of the Manhattan Life Insurance Company, Citizen’s Fire Insurance Company, Citizens Bank, Butchers and Drovers National Bank, Union Trust Company and the Third National Bank of New York City. He was also connected with Trinity School. He was a member of the Episcopal Communion, and for many years a warden of Ascension P. E. Church, of New York City. In Rye, he was a most valued member of Christ Parish, giving largely for all charities and parish work. During his busy life Mr. Schell had given much of his time to the work of public education, being at one time a school trustee. He was a most unassuming and unpretentious man, and never sought public office, though his prominence in business circles could have elevated him to the highest position in the gift of the people. Wherever he was known, at the clubs, or in the institutions with which he was connected, the announcement of his death caused general sorrow and regret. The funeral services were held from the Ascension Episcopal Protestant Church, 5th Avenue and 10th Street yesterday at 10:30 a.m., and interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The New York Tribune of this morning has the following: “As the coffin was borne into the church it was preceded by Robert Schell, the dead man’s brother; Mrs. Robert Schell, E. H. Schell, his son; Mrs. E. H. Schell, Miss Mary E. Schell, his daughter; Francis Schell, a nephew, and Mrs. Francis Schell, Samuel Cragin, his son-in-law, and Miss Florence Cragin, Miss Jennie Cragin, and Miss Elsie Cragin. Then came pall bearers. They were: Judge A. R. Lawrence, Robert Remsen, Edward King, Henry Tabot, Joseph Bird, Joseph Park, W. H. Oakley, and George W. Quintard. At the end of the services the body was taken to Woodlawn Cemetery. Only the members of the family and a few intimate friends accompanied it.”

Among those present at the Church were Cornelius Vanderbilt... [the article continues and concludes with the names of 46 other people].

Obituary

Jonas S. Heartt died at his residence in Troy Sunday evening last [sic, he actually died on Friday 3 January, as confirmed by his obituary in other newspapers, including the one cited below], after an attack of pneumonia lasting two weeks. Mr. Heartt was born in 1830. In 1861 he married Marcia, younger daughter of Judge Hand of this village. A few years after her death he married Miss Hall, granddaughter of Ex-Gov. Hiland Hall of Vermont.

Mr. Heartt was one of Troy’s business men. He was a gentleman of strictest integrity, honest and upright in all his personal and business transactions.

By his request his remains were incinerated at the Earl crematory on the afternoon of the 6th inst. [He was actually the second person cremated at the newly established Earl Crematory, as stated in several separate articles.]

We copy the following from the Troy Times of Saturday last:

Jonas S. Heartt, who had been confined to his residence, No. 169 Second street, with pneumonia for two weeks, died at 11:45 o’clock last night.

The treacherous nature of pneumonia, the disease with which Jonas S. Heartt struggled for weeks, was particularly manifested in his case. At times he was considered to be mending rapidly and his recovery was confidently expected. Then hope would be suddenly destroyed by alarming symptoms which threatened to immediately terminate the life of the sufferer. He made a hard fight for life, but the disease proved fatal as above stated.

Jonas S. Heartt was the youngest son of Jonas Coe Heartt, who was prominently identified with the earlier history of the city. He was born in Troy December 31, 1830, and prepared for college in the schools of this city. After his graduation from Union college he became a clerk in the hardware store of Heartt & Co., and at one time had an interest in the business. He left the hardware trade many years ago and engaged in the manufacture of fire-brick with James Ostrander in the lower part of the city.

Seventeen years ago he became interested in the manufacture of car-wheels. At the time of his death Mr. Heartt was at the head of the firm of Jonas S. Heartt & Co., of the Empire car-wheel works at the corner of Second and Ida streets.

Many years ago Mr. Heartt married Miss Marcia Hand, daughter of Judge Hand of Elizabethtown, N.Y. Mrs. Heartt died some years later. Mr. Heartt afterward married Miss Hall, granddaughter of ex-Gov. Hiland Hall of Bennington, Vt. She died about three years ago.

A daughter and a son, Fannie and Jonas C. Heartt, survive. A sister of the deceased, Miss Mary W. Heartt, also survives. She is a resident of New York. Another sister, Mrs. Edward Schell, died a short time ago in New York.

Mr. Heartt was a director of the Mutual national bank, having succeeded his father in that position. He was also a member of the Troy club. Mr. Heartt was one of the organizers of the B. G. society, and was among its members at the time of his death. He avoided active political life and never held public office.

Mr. Heartt’s father, Hon. Jonas Coe Heartt, at the time of his death in 1874 was the oldest native-born inhabitant of Troy. He was once speaker of the assembly and held several political offices in that city. His connection with city affairs began in 1822, when he was elected alderman from the second ward. In 1833, ’35 and ’36 he represented the ward in the board of supervisors. In 1838 he was elected mayor and was re-elected until 1848, when he declined a renomination. Aside from these offices and his active interest in the hardware trade, Jonas C. Heartt was busily engaged in the affairs of other institutions. For many years he was a trustee of the Rensselaer polytechnic institute, and was long the honored president of the Troy female seminary. The wife of Jonas C. Heartt was Catherine Lamberson, who was born at Jamaica, L. I. They had nine children, Jonas S. being the youngest.

Mr. Heartt was first attached by influenza, the prevailing disease. While he was recovering from that malady he caught cold, which brought on pneumonia. His strong constitution enabled him to make a persistent but unavailing struggle.

Mr. Heartt was recognized as one of Troy’s solid business men. He was a gentleman of the strictest integrity, honest and upright in all his personal and business transactions. He was at the head of a large manufacturing establishment, and the success of that enterprise was due to his excellent business qualifications. Mr. Heartt was devoted to his family, and his circle of friends was widely extended. A good citizen, and a kind and loving husband and father, has been taken away.

Mr. Heartt was a member of St. John’s church, and for several years was a vestryman.

Marcia was married on 9 October 1861 at her father’s home, and moved to Troy with her husband, Jonas S. Heartt, Esq. She died nine months later at the age of twenty-five. Her father was Judge Augustus “A. C.” Hand, a lawyer for forty-seven years and who served in Congress as a state senator, and as a judge of the New York State Court of Appeals. They lived in Elizabethtown, Essex County, New York, and built the brick Greek Revival home in 1849, known as the Hand House. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is said to be haunted by a ghost, possibly that of Maria or her sister, Ellen, both of whom died young.25

Frances’ obituary provides brief biographical details:30

Frances Helen Hall, wife of Jonas S. Heartt, of the firm of Jonas S. Heartt & Co, carwheel manufacturers, died last evening at the family residence, No. 169 Second street. The deceased had been in ill health the last three or four years. Mrs. Heartt was the eldest daughter of the late M. C. Hall, a prominent resident of Bennington, a granddaughter of ex-Gov. Hiland Hall of Vermont, who died recently, and a niece of Trenor W. Park of Bennington. Mrs. Heartt was about forty-two years old, and her early education was received at a Philadelphia seminary. Eighteen years ago she was married at Bennington to Mr. Heartt, and coming to Troy had since resided here. She is survived by her husband, a son and a daughter, a brother, Samuel B. Hall, cashier of the First national bank of North Bennington, and a sister, Miss Sophia Hall, also of North Bennington. Mrs. Heartt was a member of St. John’s church of this city and was highly esteemed. She had a remarkably sympathetic nature, that was manifested whenever an opportunity for assisting the unfortunate was presented.30

DIVORCE QUICKLY GIVEN.

AN HEIRESS OBTAINING SEPARATION FROM HER HUSBAND.

The Sequel to that Unhappy Scandal in Troy—Mrs. George Leroy Livingston’s Sad Story—A Sudden Discovery and an Elopement.

George Leroy Livingston was six or eight years ago a fast young man about town. His mother, Mrs. John Fowler, Jr., of New Rochelle, gave him money until it was plain that he was wasting it in dissipation and extravagance, and then she ceased. He was a member of the Seventh Regiment, and of numerous social clubs. His marriage with the daughter of one of Troy’s richest men, Miss Heartt, created much comment at the time from the reason that it was said that he did so solely because she had money. Her friends opposed the match, but she persisted, and they were wedded at a time when he had scarcely a dollar in his pocket. She helped him to pay the clergyman his fee and defrayed the expenses of the bridal tour to Europe. The $60,000 that had been left to her by her mother she put in his hands, and he wasted it. Her father died soon after the wedding, and she was the heir to his $300,000. This Livingston also began to squander, and her friends say that she was often obliged to borrow small sums of money to pay the expenses of the household, so closely did he draw upon her income. The capital he rapidly diminished, yet Mrs. Livingston continued to live in excellent style, keeping up appearances in the family mansion as was the custom in her parents’ lifetime, and spending the summer at places of popular resort at the seaside. Her horses and carriages were driven as usual, and she gave entertainments the same as before.

Livingston made in Troy the acquaintance of Mr. John Gale’s daughter and was particularly attracted by Miss Mary, who, like Livingston’s wife, was heiress to a fortune. She was not a wild girl, but having grown up apart from the restraining influences of a mother, had developed a tendency to flirt, which Livingston very soon discovered. They were very much together and she became infatuated with the dashing young husband of her former friend, Miss Heartt. The intimacy ripened into love, and the tongue of scandal began to fill the town with stories. It was said that he was after Miss Gale’s money that he might squander it as he had his wife’s. For a time Miss Gale continued to visit at Mrs. Livingston’s house, and the two families were on most intimate terms. This gave the gossips yet more cause for comment.

About the middle of April Livingston began to abuse his wife, and Mrs. Livingston made accusations against him which he did not attempt to deny. The trouble was over his attentions to Miss Gale, and he drove his wife, who had heretofore believed that he cared for her, almost crazy by admitting that he loved another. She did not hesitate, but dispatching a servant for Miss Gale, confronted that young woman as she entered the Livingston mansion with the exclamation, “My husband says he loves you!” Miss Gale could only reply that she herself believed he did.

“Then leave my house and leave the town both of you,” was Mrs. Livingston’s exclamation, and she gave her husband money with which to carry out her directions. It is said in Troy that she packed his trunk with her own hands, and then ordered it sent to the depot. Then she went to Mr. Gale’s house and told him all that had been revealed to her. Mr. Gale hurried home to find that his daughter had gone. She had taken the family diamond and wearing apparel and other valuables, and had fled, and, meeting Livingston at the depot, had taken the train for Poughkeepsie. As she was of age she was out of her father’s control. Mr. Gale’s brother, who acted for him, knew of no expedient to force her to return except to have her arrested on charge of stealing the diamonds, and detectives were accordingly employed to arrest her if she would not return to her home voluntarily. Poughkeepsie, however, was overlooked, and it was not until a day or two later, when the runaway pair arrived in the Grand Central depot, that they were arrested.

Miss Gale was compelled to retrace her steps, under threats that the charge of theft should be pressed. Livingston, it is supposed, is still in this city. He was advised not to return to Troy, or he would receive a coat of tar and feathers, and this advice he has apparently followed.

Mrs. Livingston immediately instituted divorce proceedings on the ground of her husband’s adultery. Her petition briefly narrated the circumstances of his intimacy with Miss Gale, his confessions to her. His flight to Poughkeepsie was so known that no defense could be made, and Mrs. Livingston has been declared free from the unfortunate matrimonial alliance. She has already had her cards engraved with her maiden name, Miss Louise Heartt. The custody of her children is awarded to her, and she lives alone in the Troy house. The Gale family have sailed for Europe.

Edward Heartt Schell

Edward Heartt Schell was born in Troy, New York, in 1848, where he lived with his grandfather, Jonas Heartt, who was at one time mayor of Troy. He moved to New York city when a boy and lived here up to the time of his death on the 25th of January, 1910.

He was elected a trustee of the Northern Dispensary in 1889 and served the dispensary as a member of the board, until a few days before his death. His father, Edward Schell, was also a member of the board of trustees of the dispensary, having been elected in 1861, and serving as such to the time of his death in 1893. In 1876 his father served as second vice-president; in 1877 as first vice-president, and in 1878 as president of the board of trustees.

Edward Heartt Schell was graduated from Yale University in the class of 1870, and later studied law at Columbia, and was admitted to the bar of this State. He was married in 1886 to Cornelia E. Barnes, daughter of the late William Evarts Barnes, who survives him, as does also his sister, Miss M. E. Schell, who resides at 9 Washington Square North in this city. Among the many clubs and societies that he was a member of were the St. Nicholas and Manhattan Clubs, the Bar Association of the City of New York, and the St. Nicholas Society; he was also a director of the Manhattan Life Insurance Company and of the Manhattan Savings Institution.

Mr. Schell was a genial companion, a gentleman in the broadest sense of the word, and a fellow member whose memory we will all cherish in fond recollections, and in his death the trustees have lost an esteemed associate.

We extend to his widow and his sister our heartfelt sympathy in their bereavement.

The wedding announcement between Charles and his second wife Florence Burton-Holden provides insight into his life in the Philippines:11

Wedding.

HEARTT-HOLDEN.

Word reached Brooklyn this morning of the romantic marriage of a Brooklyn girl out in the Philippines. The man who has carried off a bride from this borough is a captain of the Philippine Constabulary and a deputy governor. Not long ago he scored a remarkable record in capturing a noted outlaw. His bride, after an exciting wooing, finally made up her mind that she did not want to wed him and live in the Far East. But after he had returned to the Philippines the Brooklyn girl took a new view of it and followed him.

Miss Florence Burton that was, of recent years Mrs. Florence Burton-Holden, is the Brooklyn girl wedded so romantically. The Philippine officer is Captain Charles Edward Livingston Heartt. Mrs. Burton-Holden is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Washington Burton, who for seven years now have made their home at the Hotel St. George and are well-known old Brooklynites. They are related to the famous Burton on the Thames, England.

The ceremony took place at 9 o’clock on the evening of May 14, and was solemnized at the residence of Captain and Mrs. Ralph W. Jones, 397 Nozaieda, Manila. The Rev. Mr. Hillis of the First Presbyterian Church, Manila, officiated. There were only a few guests, and the wedding was altogether a quiet affair. Mrs. Jones served as matron of honor; Lieutenant James L. Wood of the Constabulary was best man, and Captain Jones gave the bride away. A wedding supper followed.

Mrs. Burton-Holden wore a frock of pale pink crepe de chine trimmed with duchesse lace. The wedding had a distinctive military touch, both the bride-groom and his best man being in uniform. The Lohengrin and the Mendelsohn wedding marches were played.

Captain and Mrs. Heartt are to make their home in Cotabato, Island of Mindanao. Captain Heartt is deputy governor of Depeatau, Mindanao.

The bride is an expert rifle shot and horsewoman. Her engagement to Captain Heartt was announced in November of last year, when the young Philippine officer was in New York on leave. The wedding had been arranged when the bride decided the East was to far away from her friends and family. The engagement was thereupon broken, and the captain went back to his station. But the bride that was to have been was not satisfied. She “felt the East a-callin’” and the charms of the brave soldier boy were too strong to be withstood. This sprint with her five-year-old boy, she followed the captain and the wedding of six weeks ago is the latest chapter of the romance.
