Joseph’s obituary provides brief biographical details:17

Joseph Gazley, of Pultneyville, died suddenly Monday noon. He was a prominent and highly esteemed citizen of the town of Williamson. For many years he was the proprietor of the Pultneyville Hotel. He was noted for his conscientious sterling honesty, and for his resemblance in looks and actions to the famous Denman Thompson, in his play, “The Old Homestead.” He leaves a wife, one son, Byron Gazley, of this place; a daughter, Mrs. Bumpus, of Albion, and a daughter, Mrs. Fisk, of Bay City, Mich. In politics Mr. Gazley was a staunch Democrat and prominent in the party in this town.17

Kirke graduated from high school in Albion, New York, in 1893. He entered the investment bond business around 1901, and was a recognized leader in this field in Detroit and surrounding areas. In 1906 he created the firm of Bumpus & Company for the trading of municipal bonds. Kirke served in the Michigan National Guard during World War I, and during the same period he was in charge of Liberty Loans and other financial activities in southern Michigan as a special representative of the Federal Reserve Bank.5
