Ward and Louisa are buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Flint, Genesee County, Michigan.28, 29

The following biographical sketch of Ward Gazlay is taken from a biographical portrait of his son, Harlan Page Gazlay, who is referred to as “our subject.”25

[Ward Gazlay] was born in Onondaga Hollow, Onondaga County, N. Y., January 24, 1813. [the correct date is believed to be 24 December 1814] His wife, the mother of our subject, was known in her maidenhood as Miss Louisa B. Hood, and was also a native of New York, having been born September 21, 1851, at Knowlesville. [the correct date is believed to be September 28, 1821]. The parents were married August 18, 1840.

Ward Gazlay was educated in his native county and for a time before coming West acted as captain of a canal-boat. In 1837, the date of his coming to Michigan, he purchased property on the corner of First and Saginaw Streets, south, in Flint and also located one hundred sixty acres in Gaines Township, Genesee County and made a purchase in Flint Township, besides owning land in Mt. Morris Township. After locating his property he returned to New York and was married, after which he brought his bride to the Wolverine State.

Our subject’s father owned the first harness shop in Genesee County, his first location being on Saginaw street, south, occupying the same building with Benjamin Cochran. He then purchased the old Presbyterian Church which he moved to the location of his old shop and by his ingenuity and energy remodeled it and besides having a convenient harness shop rented a portion to three tenants. This building did good service for twenty-six years, until the big fire in that place. The business success which he afterward attained is illustrated in the fact that immediately after the fire he went to Detroit and restocked his shop and the next day was ready for business. Soon after he made arrangements to erect a brick block which still bears his name. In dimensions it is 44x80 feet and three stories in height. Mr. Gazlay, Sr., occupied the second story as his place of business until his death, April 7, 1886, having been engaged in successful business here for half a century. He did not meddle in public affairs, but gave his attention to his business and at the time of his death owned considerable property. In religious matters he was a member of the Presbyterian Church, holding the office of Trustee in that body. At the time of his death he left a family of six children—Elizabeth, Mrs. Brooks; Sarah, Mrs. Withey; Harlan Page, our subject; Helen C.; Alice J., Mrs. Clark, and Otis F. The mother of our subject died December 29, 1882.

OBITUARY.

Lydia D. Gazlay.

Yesterday afternoon Mrs. Lydia D. Gazlay died in her 90th year at her home, No. 136 Bird Avenue. Her recollection went back to the days when horse cars ran from Black Rock to Buffalo along the towpath and when the first New York Central trains ran along Niagara street to the Falls from the Black Rock station, then at Auburn avenue and Niagara street.

Mrs. Gazlay was born in Erie county, Pa., on August 20, 1823, and came in 1844 to Black Rock where she lived on Niagara street near Bird avenue. In 1885 she united with the Riverside Methodist Episcopal church, then on Dearborn street, and at the time of her death was its oldest member. In Civil War times she was an active worker in the Christian and sanitary commissions, when each church formed committees to provide boxes of food, clothing and other comforts for soldiers. In the years following the war, when union fairs were given by Methodist Episcopal churches to raise funds for aiding weaker congregations, Mrs. Gazlay represented Riverside. The last time she engages in public service was in October, 1871, when she worked vigorously for an entertainment given by the Y.M.C.A. for the sufferers in the Chicago fire. Her interest in religious activities is shared by other members of her family. One nephew, the Reverend William O. Stunts, Ph.D., sailing the last day of June for missionary work in Peru, and another nephew, Bishop Homer C. Stunts, being Methodist Episcopal bishop of South America.

Mrs. Gazlay was the widow of Dickinson Gazlay and the mother of Mrs. Ellen G. Ryerson and the late Richard D. Gazlay and the grandmother of Mrs. William Hipkiss, Elsie Ryerson Gazlay, Mrs. May G. Harris and Mrs. John J. Stickles. The funeral will be held from her home on Wednesday afternoon.

An interesting biographical sketch of Lewis appears in the Biographical History of Northern Michigan:27

LEWIS T. KLINE.

One of the important industries of Alpena, Michigan, is that conducted by the subject of this sketch, who is engaged in the manufacture of Kline’s excelsior and wood turning machinery, the former of which is in use in all the wood-producing counties of the state and indeed the country. Mr. Kline is a native of the Wolverine state, having been born at Flint, Michigan, on January 4, 1857, and is the son of Joseph Kline, who came to Flint in 1837, at the age of fourteen years. The subject’s great-grandfather came to America from Frankfort-on-the-Rhine, Germany, while his son, the subject’s grandfather, was one of the pioneer settlers of Michigan. The subject himself saw the first train run over the Pere Marquette Railroad. The subject received a fair education in the public schools and upon attaining his majority started out on his own account. In 1879 he came to Alpena and was first employed by C. B. Warren and later engineer for the Minor Lumber Company. In 1883 he obtained a patent for a log roller and in 1887 a patent for a log roller and log deck apparatus, which have come into extensive use in the United States and Canada and other parts of the world. He later obtained patents on a steam feed valve, an automatic lathe and his excelsior machinery, all of them being marvels of ingenuity and greatly simplifying and cheapening the cost of production. The factory for the manufacture of these articles was at first a modest affair, but has rapidly grown in response to the demand for the product, until it ranks with the leading enterprises of this city. Mr. Kline does not allow his attention to be diverted from his business interests and is rapidly acquiring a reputation throughout the trade for the value of his productions and high quality of their manufacture.

Mr. Kline has been twice married. His first wife was Miss Gazlay, of Flint, Michigan, by which union were born two sons, Arthur L., of Detroit, and Herman J., who graduated from the Alpena high school and is now taking a course in Mechanical engineering at the State University, at Ann Arbor. Mr. Kline’s second union was with Miss Elizabeth Mckinnon, of Alpena, and to them have been born four children, DeEtte, Joseph and George, twins, and Flora. Mr. Kline is a gentleman who in all circumstances in which he has been placed has borne himself with that spirit which brings to a man the respect and esteem of the entire community. He has in all respects been the architect of his own fortunes and has builded wisely and well.

HARLAN PAGE GAZLAY is a harnessmaker located at No. 1100 South Saginaw street, Flint. He is a native of this place, his father Ward Gazlay, having come here in 1837.

Harlan P. Gazlay, our subject, was born in Flint, August 25, 1850. [the correct date is believed to be August 20, 1850.] He received a common-school education in his native place and afterward learned the trade of harness-making from his father, and March 1, 1882, established in business for himself. He later purchased the property at the corner of Saginaw and Sixth Streets, South, where he opened his shop and had his residence located in the same block. They have continued in this location ever since. Our subject served for eleven years as a member of the Hook and Ladder company during the volunteer service.

He of whom we write was married April 14, 1877, to Miss Margaretta Houghtaling, of Lapeer County, and to them have been born one son—J. Harlan. Otis F. Gazlay, brother of our subject, was born December 29, 1864, and after receiving a fair education, also learned the trade of a harness-maker under the tutelage of his father, continuing in his employ until the death of Mr. Gazlay. He has resided most of the time with our subject. He has an interest in the estate left by his father. Our subject is one of the well-known and successful business men in Flint.
