“New Berlin. Jan. 27. --Relatives in town have received the announcement of the death of Mr. Julius Angel, at his home in Bangor, Maine. He will be remembered as the only child of his widowed mother, the late Mrs. Betsey Ann Angel, an old resident of this village. Several years ago Julius went to the state of Maine and engaged in railroading, and had worked his way up to the responsible position of engineer, and had the confidence of the company by which he was employed. Nearly two years ago he met with an accident, on the road, that has incapacitated him since that time, and his untimely death is due to the injuries he received at that time.”29

The accident “on the road” actually occurred only 11 months previous, on 23 February 1889, and was covered in newspapers across the nation. Julius was the engineer on a train traveling from Bangor to St. John, Maine. Blamed on a misplaced switch, the accident caused the train to derail onto a siding and catch fire, seriously injuring Julius and killing three other railroad employees. Several other employees were pulled from the wreckage with minor injuries. None of the passengers were injured.
